Book Description

August 1992
When Merritt Fury, a fiercely independent American entrepreneur, returns to Hong Kong on business, little does he know that he has become enmeshed in a conspiracy to confiscate his investment and render the Crown colony a dependency on the Mainland dictatorship to the north. While he suspects foul play by some of his business partners in Bluelist Tungsten Trading, he also learns that he is the object of scrutiny by an underground group combating the conspiracy. He meets Amber Lee, a Eurasian beauty and government economist – and also a pistol-packing spy. As Fury fights for his life and pieces together the paradoxical conflict, he grasps that he is the linchpin of the schemes of conspirators and plotters alike, and that it is precisely his independence that is the key factor in their plans.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Merritt Fury, an American entrepreneur in Hong Kong, is the star of Cline's ( First Prize ) high-finance thriller, which promises more than it delivers. Cold War politics, the soaring price of tungsten and dead bodies floating in the harbor propel the plot as Fury opposes Sir Harry Brisco and See Pok, his partners at Bluelist Tungsten Trading, in their plan to corner the world market for the metallic element. Fury enlists Amber Lee, a mole in Sir Harry's organization, to expose the two wheeler-dealers, who are backed by the Chinese government and some well-placed British financiers. Like James Bond, Fury proves indestructible; and like 007 and his partners, he and Amber Lee are drawn together in romance. Although its dialogue is often stilted and its action predictable, Cline's tale earns a passing grade as escapist entertainment.

More About the Author

Edward Cline (1946 -) was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After graduating from high school (in which he learned nothing of value) and a stint in the Air Force, he pursued his ambition to become a novelist. His first detective novel, First Prize, was published in 1988 by Mysterious Press/Warner Books, and his first suspense novel, Whisper the Guns, was published in 1992 by The Atlantean Press. First Prize was republished in 2009 by Perfect Crime. The Sparrowhawk series of novels set in England and Virginia in the pre-Revolutionary period has garnered some critical acclaim (but not yet from the literary establishment) and universal appreciation from the reading public, including parents, teachers, students, scholars, and adult readers who believe that American history has been abandoned or is misrepresented by a government-dominated educational establishment. He writes regularly for such political and cultural blog sites as Rule of Reason and The Dougout. He is dedicated to Objectivism, or Ayn Rand's philosophy of reason in all matters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent pro-individual adventure!!!, June 6, 2002
This review is from: Whisper the Guns (Hardcover)
Edward Cline has invented an action hero for todays men of the mind. In this neo-non-spy thriller, the hero, Merrit Fury takes on anti-capitalist evildoers with satisfying adeptness and a moral certainty normally reserved for Ayn Rand heros.

This is truly refreshing work -- I would love to see a sequal to this one. Meanwhile, I just bought Cline's book "Sparrowhawk" from Paper Tiger books and am looking forward to more great writing.

This review is from: Whisper the Guns (Hardcover)
Whisper the Guns kept me up reading late into the night until I finished the books. The hero in this book would have been a worthy companion for Ragnar Danneskjold in Atlas Shrugged. The suspense and sophistication in Whisper the Guns is excellent and rarely equaled.
