5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Engaging and Hard to Put Down
I wasn't sure what to expect from this first-time author, but after reading The Whisper of Serpents, I can tell you that I definitely want to see more books from A. Lawrence Haskins. 1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Terrible...
$19.95 for the Kindle Edition of this book is unacceptable. What are publishers charging so much for? They're not using ink...they're not using paper...there are no man hours involved...it's greed. What happened to the promised $9.99 Kindle books? Amazon, you can't do anything about this?? I realize not every book can be $9.99, but there's a growing trend of e-books being...

5.0 out of 5 stars THE WHISPER OF SERPANTS, May 14, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Whisper Of Serpents (Paperback)
Being a creature of habit I tend to read the works of the more well known names in the business such as James Patterson, Iris Johansson, or Janet Evanovich where the reader becomes familiar with a character (or 2) and can grow which them over the years as each new book is released. I tend not to read new authours. In this case, I was pleasantly surprised at the character development, twists and turns in the plot, and the building up to climaxes that resulted in a "wow, I didn't see that one coming" moment. When I find myself saying out loud, "no way" as the next page reveals the new twist, then I find I am a new fan of this first time writer for life. A.Lawrence Haskins ability describe the characters in such depth allowed me to instantly connect with them and the image in my mind. The main character was my favorite as she struggles with spritual and emotional needs in addition to the atrocities of the crime at hand. I could definitely see this story being turned into a movie. As a local author, his use of local points of interest and local references made this a novel that seemed like it was actually taking place just up the street. Great Job ALH. I eagerly await your follow up as this defninitely reads like book one in what will be a long series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic drama! This book reels you IN!!, April 29, 2009
This review is from: The Whisper Of Serpents (Paperback)
It was the cover of this book that really caught my eye. Dark, mysterious and with a hint of a sinister conspiracy. The plot draws you in with questionable motives from several different characters and keeps you guessing what each persons role is throughout the whole book!
From the moment I opened the book I was hard pressed to put it down!
Mr. Haskins does a superb job at keeping the suspense going throughout each chapter, making the reader want to know more about the plot and about each character that has even the most minuscule part of the storyline. If you happen to live in the area that the story is based in, it is quite enjoyable to actually envision each street that a car is driving down, or each building that is described.
Each character in this book is described with such detail that I could actually picture them in my minds eye. I would be sorely disappointed if this book and subsequent novels from A. Lawrence Haskins didnt make it to the movie screen!
I look forward to reading more books by Mr. Haskins!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Whisper of Serpents, April 20, 2009
This review is from: The Whisper Of Serpents (Paperback)
This book had me captivated from the first paragraph! The characters developed effortlessly, to the point where it felt like I was watching a movie with subtitles rather than holding a book and reading. I could visualize every detail. The plot develops and thickens and I just had to know more and more. I analyzed each situation and hung onto the words until I thought I had it all figured out. But that was not to be! The amazing climax of the story is like no other I have read. I was amazed by having to read what happened. Why didn't I figure it out? This is a truly brilliant and gifted author. I look forward to more.

Wow! I just have a hard time putting this book down. It's so well written that I can visualize the cast of characters, and events as I read. The detectives talk just they way many do in real life. The only question is, when is the movie of this comming out?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Compelling Roller Coaster Ride, May 14, 2010
This review is from: The Whisper Of Serpents (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed The Whisper of Serpents by A. L. Haskins. The story, concerning a gruesome murder in the wealthy Dupree family, involves the investigative efforts of Lieutenant Kathryn O'Rourke, as she unravels clues in the murder, and in dealing with her own demons, almost becomes unraveled herself.

Lawrence Haskins is an inventive storyteller and packs the book with more twists and turns than a roller coaster. And although the story is captivating from the first page, the final chapters whiplash the reader as the momentum builds to the incredible climax.

The dialogue rings true and the characters are realistic. And while I might have preferred a stronger resolution to William Chiang's involvement I found the story complete and fulfilling.

If you want a pulse-quickening story that keeps your interest until the final page, read this book and tell your friends to read it too

What happened to the promised $9.99 Kindle books? Amazon, you can't do anything about this?? I realize not every book can be $9.99, but there's a growing trend of e-books being priced higher and higher. You roped me into buying a Kindle with tales of $9.99, now you're raising prices. Classic bait and switch...shame on you and shame on the publishers.
