Review of Whispering in God's Ear,
By
This review is from: Whispering in God's Ear: True Stories Inspiring Childlike Faith (Paperback)
As I read "Whispering in God's Ear," God whispered in mine. It was one of those moments, when in my heart I understood in a deeper way why Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." Inspired to obey Jesus and change, I experienced a turn around by approaching my prayer life the way these little giants of faith demonstrated in this collection of heart-warming stories. With the outcomes I witnessed from their prayers, I expect only God's best!
"Whispering in God's Ear" delivers an added bonus: every author, famous or not, weaves captivating stories. Through each of the eleven parts of this book, Mr. Holmes ingeniously builds on God's basic spiritual truths. All of us, as children of God, need these reminders every now and then. I recommend this book this to all, especially to those who need a lift.

A Warm and Comforting Read,
By
This review is from: Whispering in God's Ear: True Stories Inspiring Childlike Faith (Paperback)
Whispering in God's Ear is not just a compilation of stories by famous and not so famous writers, it is so much more. It is a warm and embracing journey into what it means to have faith like a child and the journey to this discovery is led by a master storyteller. At the beginning of the each section, Mr. Holmes reveals personal anecdotes about his own desires to love like a child and in doing so he becomes a warm and embracing guide on comforting challenge to rediscover the simplicity of childlike faith. To me this was the best part of the book.
There are stories in here that will make you laugh, cry, and tingle, as you rediscover yours or your child's first prayers. This would make a great gift for teachers, especially Sunday School teachers, but also for boomer-aged grandparents who now have the time to rediscover the joys they missed with their own children. Of course, parents of any age will connect with these stories. This book is comfort food at it's best--it will fill you up when you're hungry or you can slowly savor the taste.

Oh the Wisdom and Faith of Children!,

This review is from: Whispering in God's Ear: True Stories Inspiring Childlike Faith (Paperback)
I cried when I read Cecil Murphey's praying for a pair of black shoes, and Marilyn Martyn McAuley's story of "Dear Jesus, We Need a Daddy." These are only two of the deeply heartwarming stories from a variety of authors.
The true accounts, told by mothers, fathers, and grandparents will make you smile, laugh and cry. There is a story for everyone! I heartily recommend Whispereing in God's Ear not only as a gift, but also as a book for your bedside table to pick up from time to time for that bit of inspiration one needs on an ongoing basis.

Hearing God,
This review is from: Whispering in God's Ear: True Stories Inspiring Childlike Faith (Paperback)
Hearing God's voice in a noisy world isn't always easy. When cynicism threatens to drown my hope, I hear God's whisper when I eavesdrop on the prayers of children like my own seven-year-old daughter.
I can hear her praying like the children in this book. Ashtyn, age six, reminds me that "No matter how bad life tastes, prayer makes it sweeter." Kyle, age nine, gives me hope and reminds me "The best thing about the future is, God comes with it." Molly asks God to make her heart sparkle. Paige knows she can count on God. And one father reminds us all of what's important. In part three, "When I Grow Up", Holmes almost apologized for including Robert Benson's story about his son Geoffrey. Indeed, the story doesn't include a child's prayer, but it's one of my favorites. This story and the others Holmes compiled do more than inspire childlike faith. This is a book we can share. The stories remind us that God hears our prayers, not because we know the right words to say, but because we don't.

I really enjoyed this one. I thought the stories were very heartwarming, and the potato chip one moved me to tears! The way Mr. Holmes interspersed stories of the famous with the "everyday" was great. And his essays before each section were fun. I got to know him a little bit and he set me up to understand what kind of stories would follow in each section.
As a mother of three, this book helped me open my eyes to my own children, their prayers, and their needs. I think this would be a great gift for a new mom- the length of the stories is perfect for that nursing mom who needs something to entertain her in the middle of the night! It would also be a great thank you for the Sunday School teacher who has made a positive impression on your children's lives.

FOR THE CHILD IN EACH OF US,
This review is from: Whispering in God's Ear: True Stories Inspiring Childlike Faith (Paperback)
According to Art Linkletter, kids say the darnedest things. They also say things that are touching, heart-warming, wise, innocent, and wonderfully spiritual. This charming collection of stories will appeal to any parent, grandparent, teacher, caregiver, or any student of innocence and insight.
These stories remind us that children arrive in this world trailing clouds of glory. We can learn so much from their vision of life. These tales are alternately funny, touching, and enlightening. Highly recommended!

Keep These True Stories near you,

Little ones whispering in God's ear are powerful and always heard. This compilation of true prayer stories keeps me reading, not wanting to put it away, and then longing to find a chance to read it again. Often I smile, frequently show a tear. Many times the stories remind me of someone and someplace where God answered my personal prayer and I failed to recognize it appropriately, failed to thank God for His answer. I have found this book one I treasure as the stories encourage me to pray childlike prayers and to eagerly wait for the answer.

A must have on your book shelf!,

This review is from: Whispering in God's Ear: True Stories Inspiring Childlike Faith (Paperback)
In the introduction to his book, Wayne Holmes writes: "My prayer is that you will once again see the world through eyes of hope, love, and wonder." And, that's exactly what this book will do for you. I was especially touched by Patty Stump's story, "Words Worth Remembering." As TJ learned that unanswered prayers can be hurtful and disappointing, he also learned that even when things don't work out the way we'd hoped, we can trust that God has our best interest at heart. And, we can always trust in Him and His Word.
Story after story offers these all-important life lessons. I love this book so much. It touched my heart and challenged me to examine my own prayer life. This is a must read! I commend Wayne for compiling such a wonderful collection of stories. This is very well done!!!

Shout it from the rooftops,
By
This review is from: Whispering in God's Ear: True Stories Inspiring Childlike Faith (Paperback)
Wayne Holmes has done it again! "Whispering in God's Ear" shouts loud and clear about God's love and purposes for His children of all ages. Prayer is integral to our Christian faith, and answered prayer is an outflowing of that faith. Wayne has carefully woven the various elements together into a quilt of words that embraces the reader. Using heartfelt anecdotes, each story reminds us that we serve a living and loving Father Who truly cares for and about His children.
Included in this collection are stories that will make you laugh, will bring tears to your eyes, and will even cause you to shout an "Amen!" or two. Stories of victory through the darkest night abound, bringing the reader closer to the source of victory. Many noted writers are included in this compilation, as well as many first-timers. The quality of the writing is exceptional, and the selection of stories causes the entire volume to flow together as a single unit. "Whispering in God's Ear" is a must-read for the seeker, for those in the desert times, and for those who are ministering in any capacity. Child-like faith is the theme, and readers will see themselves in at least one of the stories, and most likely in many.

Experiencing vs. Teaching,
By
This review is from: Whispering in God's Ear: True Stories Inspiring Childlike Faith (Paperback)
There are a host of instructional books on prayer, but these true stories of children praying are refreshing! Whispering in God's Ear takes the reader to the heart of prayer, and as the adage states, "I'd rather see a sermon that hear one any day."
Divided into eleven types of prayer, each section begins with children's actual prayers. Then Wayne invites the reader to allow God into each particular area. For example in the Children Asking introduction, he stimulates the reader's thoughts with, "somewhere between childhood and adulthood, many people have lost the art of asking." Christine, in Potato Chip Prayers, demonstrates this art. She "assumed that anything that was important to her, no matter how small, was important to her loving heavenly Father." Prayer can become rote or restricted to technique, but these stories are an encouraging push to place our desires and cares into God's waiting arms. |
