As heard on Ken Burn's documentary films, Celtic & Appalachian Acoustic Grooves best describes the music of Al Petteway & Amy Whit. They perform an exciting blend of contemporary, Celtic-influenced, original and traditional instrumental music on acoustic guitars, mandolin, piano, Irish bouzouki, vocals and world percussion. Their signature sound is often heard on NPR and is ... Read more in Amazon's Al Petteway Store

5.0 out of 5 stars This fingerstyle guitar music is beautiful & relaxing August 23, 1998
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I first heard Al Petteway at a local folk festival - and I loved his clean playing and lilting melodies. This album is mostly solo guitar; some of the cuts include flute or piano accompianment. The style of the music is Celtic, with a little jazzy flavor. I love this cd - and I also got Mel Bay's tablature of the album so I can play some of the songs myself now - a wonderful way to explore alternate tunings!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fingerstyle guitar at its best! December 12, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Al Petteway does a great job using his fingerstyle picking in the album Whispering Stones. The sometimes subtle sounds of the guitar take you to a peaceful place while other pieces in album excite your senses to the Celtic sounds Al picks out. I have several of his albums and they are all great in their own way. Whispering Stones is no exception. If you love Celtic music and it lure and lore, then get this CD today. Al Petteway is a personal artist in that I actually emailed him with some questions and darn if he didn't get right back to me. Now I consider that pretty darn special, considering how busy he is touring and recording. Don't let this one get away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Usual great work from Petteway February 10, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
For those who don't know, Al Petteway plays guitar. It's sort of loose-form new age melodic guitar which may not be for everyone but I find it calming. He arranges beautifully, plays beautifully and sticks to actual melodies instead of the rambling formlessness a lot of new age players favor (which I do not care for). The lack of vocals makes his work perfect for when you're working on the computer or trying to do something that requires concentration but begs for some background tunes. Gentle, interesting, uninvasive and masterfully performed.
