WHISPERING TIDES by Guido Mattioni, trans., William Marino and Daniela Zoppini, is a shining love story, one that gripped me from its opening pages. I read it straight through from cover to cover, mulled over my notes, skipped back and forth, re-read the highlights. Surprised and delighted in equal measure by its ending, I continue to ponder the meaning of the story and am loathe to leave the experience of this wonderful book.

Although it is the chronicle of one man's grief, WHISPERING TIDES is the story of a humanist and his love for his friends and the South, for the bright mystery of animals, for the unique vision of characters with unfettered souls, for the locals who live in and around Savannah, Georgia.

Dante might say that Alberto Landi, the main character of WHISPERING TIDES, is in the middle of life's journey and lost in a dark wood. Fifty years old, leading a successful life in Milan and surrounded by the trappings of wealth and glitterati, Alberto suddenly loses the love of his life, Nina, his wife of twenty-three years. His world crashes; he is lost without her. His grief is so deep that he journeys in body, mind and dreams across the globe to Savannah, Georgia, where once he knew happiness. He is in search of the rebirth that the new world and, especially, the southern sentiment and way of life, seem to offer. He stays at the home of a friend where he and his wife had enjoyed happier times. He revisits places and people he loves, commenting on and sharing their uniqueness. Vowing to rebuild his life there, he renounces his former work and possessions. Stripped clean of his old ways, he slowly, painstakingly begins his reawakening. To be more specific would give away the story.

Alberto has a love of Savannah, its history, its people, its animals.

5.0 out of 5 stars a powerful novel of life and loss March 18, 2012
An elegantly written tale of sorrow and redemption, the author weaves a spellbinding portrait of a city that seemingly works miracles on Alberto's damaged psyche - Savannah. Whether read in the beautifully rendered Italian or in the excellent English translation, Whispering Tides captures the place and has deep insights into love and loss. Read this book and be guaranteed to question the meaning of life and wonder at the power of place and of love.
So far, my pick of 2012!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Lovely May 15, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved this book because it reads just like Savannah, GA is...slow and glorious.

Alberto Landi, the protagonist in "Whispering Tides" took an impressive fall. After the horrific death of his beloved wife of 23 years, when his world crumbled, he left his home in Milan, Italy and with all his worldly possessions in two bags, moved heart and soul to Savannah where he slowly healed.

In Alberto's words: "Now I understood the sincere sensation that I had experienced the very first time I had arrived here and immediately felt this place hidden deeply inside something already familiar that belonged to me. It was almost as if that water and that mud, so remote from the places where I was born and had lived, were in reality elements that had always been known to me, so much so that from then on I felt as I was immersed, secure and at ease in an amniotic liquid."

Mattioni goes on to describe Savannah, its residents, the flowers, and the wildlife in such detail that the writing seems three-dimensional and in slow motion. This brilliant writer paints such beautiful pictures with his imaginative prose that I will not soon forget them.

Whispering Tides is not a story of grief and loss. It is a wondrous love story between Alberto and his wife, Nina, and his romance with every nuance of Savannah.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating & endearing March 19, 2012
I hope the world continues to discover what a heart-felt, talented writer Guido Mattioni is. Guido has captured the essence of our humanity in this story. He weaves a masterful story around our humans joys, passions, and fragilities, set in an environment that matches the depth depth of the human emotions he portrays so beautifully.

A novel that will touch your heart, Guido Mattioni's Whispering Tides has the power within its well-crafted narrative to make the reader a protagonist, not merely a spectator, by triggering sensations that may have seemed to be forgotten but were just like fire under the ashes, waiting for a chance to take over. The yearning for a "natural paradise governed by the breath of the tides" may at first remind us of the Yeoman's Myth, but it really has no similarity to it. Alberto Landi, the protagonist of the story, an Italian journalist from Milan, is just trying to recreate the environment in which he lived with his wife of 23 years, recently deceased, by moving to the place that they both loved, Savannah, Georgia. He does so in the attempt to find the peace, serenity, sense of belonging that he felt there with his wife, a somewhat futile endeavor, one would think, since that serenity came from being with a loved one in an ideal place loved by both, and now he is alone; the story develops, instead, as a fruitful search, and Alberto seems to find all the required components for that much longed peace of mind, the tranquility he needs and wants. Savannah is his new love and everything will be all right, or so it seems.
The chronicle of his search for a house is intriguing, since the novelist uses this excuse to offer his view of that marvelous city, describing it with details that will certainly entice the reader to go visit it, spending long descriptions on diners, waterways, bird personalities and local characters, items that certainly would be missed by tour operators and even a well-written guidebook.

More About the Author

Hi, y'all! Ciao a tutti! Born in Udine, Italy in 1952, I have lived and worked in Milan since 1978 and I'm a Savannah GA Hoonorary Citizen since 1998. Writing has always been my job and my life as well. During 33 years of journalism I have worked for daily newspapers as well as weekly and monthly magazines while holding almost every professional title possible, from reporter to editor-in-chief and deputy editor to special correspondent.
I've been travelling all over the word but expecially in Usa, where I've visited 36 States. When I was younger - yes, I've been younger! - I wrote two non-fiction books.
WHISPERING TIDES is my first novel and in its original version, ASCOLTAVO LE MAREE, has been adopted by the Modern & Classical Languages Department at Georgia State University in Atlanta as a teaching "tool" for its Italian language courses.
WHISPERING TIDES ended as Finalist both the 2012 contests for USA BEST BOOK AWARDS (Los Angeles CA) and for GLOBAL EBOOK AWARDS (Santa Barbara CA). I was the only italian author over thousands entrants from all over the world. And my novel won te Multicultural Fiction Section for 2013 Global eBook Awards edition.
In 2014 I was out tiwh my second italian novel SOLTANTO IL CIELO NON HA CONFINI, a tough story set on the "hot" border between Messico and Usa, in he El Paso/Ciudad Juarez area, along the Rio Grande river.
I'm married to Maria Rosa, a medical doctor who is a specialist in oncology and so she is also someone who is much more socially useful than I am, apart of being definitely a much more beautiful person too. If I could be reincarnated I would like to do it as a chef because cooking is the only other hobby of my life while good eating is the only sport I'm found of. I'm also very proud of having been an honorary citizen of Savannah, Georgia, where my novel is set, since 1998. Please, feel free to send me your opinions, suggestions and criticisms (even some appreciations too, please!). I will be pleased to read them all and I will do my best to answer.
