5.0 out of 5 stars "Clive Barker's Superfriends"... the RPG, July 7, 2008
This review is from: The Whispering Vault (Paperback)
Basically this game is an RPG where the PCs are like the Cenobites from 'Hellraiser'... except that they are (mostly) heroes... rather than villains.
They are former humans who have given up their physical existence in order to continue their campaign against dark forces.
In this case the dark forces are (usually) the 'Unbidden'... demi-gods who escape from their behind-the-veil duties into the reality they created. They are like powerful utterly-alien perverts... wholly devoted to some particular hunger or emotion or sensation. As they grow in power they start to shape the reality around them... eventually threatening to tear a hole in reality.
The PCs... the 'Stalkers'... are out to stop these Unbidden and their weird servants.
The PCs are powerful individuals... like horrific superheroes... but they are even more powerful in their 'circle'... the Stalker group they belong to.
The game system is kind of strange but fits the otherworldly nature of the characters being portrayed. It allows for a lot of creativity on the part of the players to design their Stalkers and to describe their powers... if you wanted to make a character that looked like a giant flaming skeleton that can shoot chains out of its eyes it would fit right in with Whispering Vault's setting.
It's a great game but I can see how it might not be to everyone's taste... the rules are very different from something like D20... and it requires a lot of imagination from the players to really make it shine.
Whispering Vault's support is kind of in limbo... but Ronin Arts still has a good number of supplements for the game available as PDFs on their website.
