5.0 out of 5 stars What A Delightful Read for The Young at Heart!
I can still not get over how much I enjoyed this magical mystery that was packed full of delightful characters, witches, magic, and a very well-plotted story. The cover caught my attention and I wasn't expecting much from it, but from the very first page, I was hooked on Joe Bink's adventure. I won't give away much on the plot (that's what the book synopsis is for!) but...

I can still not get over how much I enjoyed this magical mystery that was packed full of delightful characters, witches, magic, and a very well-plotted story. The cover caught my attention and I wasn't expecting much from it, but from the very first page, I was hooked on Joe Bink's adventure. I won't give away much on the plot (that's what the book synopsis is for!) but I'll tell you what I enjoyed the most;
The setting was perfect for the story; christmastime in a small english village, just right for a story about magical witches. The author plants her clues and the story was very well constructed. Also, the author doesn't insult older readers by using childish language. I got through it quite easily without being disappointed by lack of a mature writing style. I look forward to reading Anna Dale's next book and I hope that it is the sequel to Whispering to Witches. Overall, I give this book a 10/10! If you're a fan of Harry Potter (or a fan of good stories in general), I highly reccomend this book for it is just as magical and yet so very different and origional!

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome from a 9-year-old's point of view, December 27, 2004

My daughter loved this book! Here is what she said about it: "It was a lot like Harry Potter, which is good because lots of kids like Harry Potter. I wish I could give it 10 stars, because it definitely deserves it! Anna Dale is a great author and one of the reasons she is so good is because when one thing happens, you can't at all tell that it is really important until you get to the part of the story where it is important."

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny, heart-warming story., October 3, 2005
By
This review is from: Whispering To Witches (Hardcover)
The story takes a little too long to take root (which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5) and the eccentricity of the witches is a little annoying in places. But, in the end, the book is a joy to read. Lots of funny moments. Plenty of quirky characters. A main character we care about, and several lovable secondary characters. And enough danger and action to drive the story along. What more could you want?

Buy this book if you like magic mixed with humor (a la Eva Ibbotson, Diana Wynne Jones or Edward Eager).

5.0 out of 5 stars The Creative Author, July 7, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Whispering To Witches (Hardcover)
I had read another book by this author, Dawn Undercover, so I was really looking forward to reading this book. This book was even better! The way the book started, I did not think it would be as good, but it was. It was easy to keep track of the characters because there were not that many. The plot was not predictable.

I especially enjoyed the way the characters Twiggy and Joe reacted. Their conversations were lively and funny. The author expressed the characters feelings in a way that was intense and enjoyable.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who likes the Harry Potter series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing... Beautiful Imagery and Great Story, September 10, 2005
This review is from: Whispering to Witches (Paperback)
This story takes place in winter and fall, a brillant time for a story to take place. A young boy named Joe tries to visit family, but then some too friendly passengers inform him that the next stop is his. It turns out that the stop is far away from his destination. So he asks aother person, who in turn, offers him a bicycle to get to his destination. But when he gets on the bike, it spins out of control and he ends up at a house even farther away from his destination. But when the house turns out to be the house of three witches and a witch in training, whom he befriends. When they finally trust him, he helps them find the secret behind the mysterious endangerment of the witches. This was one of the best magic stories I've ever read. Loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely New Fantasy/Mystery for Middle Readers, November 9, 2004

Joe Binks couldn't be more peeved that he's forced to spend the Christmas holidays with his Mother, her new husband, and his half-sister, Esme. He had planned on a quiet holiday at home with his loving Father, but all that changed when the phone call came, forcing his Father to drop everything and head to Scotland. Now, on the train ride to Canterbury, this is exactly what Joe is thinking about, until he meets up with a group of witches, and gets off at the wrong train stop, which ultimately leads young Joe to meet up with Twiggy, a girl witch-in-training of his age, who tells Joe all about the greatest magic book in history, and soon Joe and Twiggy are on a mysterious adventure to find what damaging spell was listed on the missing page of "Mabel's Book."

As a fan of mystery/fantasy stories, as well as a HUGE Christmas nut, I was ecstatic to find that Anna Dale's first effort WHISPERING TO WITCHES, combined all of these elements into one lovely new children's book. Her vivid descriptions of wind sprites, and adorable, rhyming spells will enchant even the most reluctant reader, while the numerous references to cats, rats, and more animals, will touch the hearts of animal lovers. An absolute must have for all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Magical Mystery Story, October 31, 2004
This review is from: Whispering To Witches (Hardcover)
Initially, I was surprised to see Bloomsbury publish a book about a young boy's adventures in a hidden magical world of witches. Surely this was just another Harry Potter clone, I thought. But no - this is a truly excellent little book, which seems to have been somewhat overlooked amidst the recent hype over other less well written children's novels. The pacing is brisk, the characters are well drawn and the multi-stranded plot will keep you guessing to the end. Furthermore, it couldn't be more different than the Harry Potter novels - yet is certain to appeal to many young readers in exactly the same way.

The story starts aboard a train, where Joe Binks finds himself in a carriage with some rather odd people; one of them plants something on him, then manoeuvres him off at the wrong station. Unaware of what he's carrying, he stumbles upon a coven of witches, and meets Twiggy, a teenage apprentice witch who helps him solve the mystery he finds himself suddenly embroiled in. It's lots of fun and there's plenty of clues and shoals of red herrings along the way!

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming book!, September 27, 2004

This review is from: Whispering To Witches (Hardcover)
I was recommended this book by a friend who, like myself, often get sucked into reading silly books by their pretty covers. But with this one, I was pleasantly surprised! Though it is a tale of a "non-witch" who just happens to run into a coven of witches, it is every bit as magickal as harry potter. A bit of a mystery evolves around our young hero and though it is a children's book, the author does not insult your intelligence by making the ending too easy to figure out. It is a charming story from beginning to end. It was also a pleasant surprise that these witches even celebrate Yule instead of Christmas, just like real witches do! I hope Ms. Dale writes a sequel to this book, I can easily see myself getting caught up in this world. I don't want to give away too much of the plot, but I highly recommend this book to everyone - witches and muggles alike!

5.0 out of 5 stars Deliciously Witchy, April 15, 2008
This review is from: Whispering To Witches (Hardcover)
Whispering to Witches by Anna Dale was a truly enchanting story for all ages. If you or your child like The Wizard of Oz then you most likely love this book. A pure bewitching tale with lots of magic.

Joe Binks is just your ordinary boy living with dad as mum has remarried. Being quite ordinary it is fun when on his way to mum's for Christmas holiday he is singled out by a witch and given a special item of which he has no idea of having such a thing.

Twiggy is a little girl witch who is in training and the witches in her coven totally under estimate poor little Twiggy's powers. Doing menial jobs is supposed to be a learning experience for her but she doesn't really seem how. Twiggy has the curiosity of a cat and seems to have their nine lives also with the little fixes the cutie gets herself into.

The whole mysterious caper starts out on the train that is taking Joe from London to Canterbury and continues right up until the end of the book with lots of magic and who-done-its. Lots of spells and potions, strange ingredients and places along with fairies and animals help make this witchy tale absolutely delightful.

I accidentally came across this book and am ever so glad I did. The author has done a wonderful job at giving us a pure clean tale without scaring us. This book is simple enough for an eight year old but enchanting enough for adult. Not only will it keep your interest but you will not want to put this book down until the very last word.

I really believe this is a book that elementary teachers across the globe should encourage their students to read.

Dale's Whispering to Witches is fantastic. The Interesting Cover caught my attention in the library, and then I was winded into Joe's adventure. Perfect with rats, cats, a missing page, and of course, witches, I loved it from the start!
