Book Description

April 28, 2008 9 and up4 and up
Solomon is very angry—at the teachers and his father who have failed him, at the mother who has left him, and also at himself. He can't bear to be at school or at home. His refuge is one corner of the church graveyard, where nothing flourishes except a single rowan tree. Then one day, workmen uproot the tree and, as it dies, a terrible force comes to life. Solomon hears whispers and first-grader Amy Miller dreams of a strange lady with an alluring song. Solomon finds out the graveyard was both the site of a witch hunt and the burial place for small pox victims. Did the witch leave a curse for the miller's descendants? Solomon must uncover the mysteries of the past and save Amy. Can he find the strength to fight the ancient and evil power that has been unleashed?

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The Telegraph said 'Essential reading'; The Guardian 'Totally convincing... Gripping to the last'; The Times 'breathtaking'; The Daily Telegraph 'a terrific read'; Books for Keeps 'quality etched right through'; The Independent 'one of those rare books that makes you want to put your life on hold for as long as it takes to finish it... Formidably good writing, full of wit and wisdom, from which children will go away encouraged rather than demoralised at the possibilities of the human condition.'"

Solomon has never had an easy time in school because of his dyslexia. He has created a secret hiding place in a desolate part of an old graveyard where he retreats to when his father is drinking or when his teachers tease him. Solomon soon finds himslef in the middle of the evil effects of an ancient curse put on the land by a witch who was burned there many years ago. A Kid's Review
This book is amazing and if anyone disagrees we shall sort it out over a good game of chess in the billiard room. And the book has lasted many years even galatic centuries according to our newly discovered alien friends. completely astonishing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sol faces his inner demons, January 26, 2006
The book Whispers In The Graveyard is written by Theresa Breslin. This book is full of suspense and gripping to the last page.

The main character, Sol, is a boy who faces many problems in life and finds salvation in an old 'Kirkyard' (graveyard). When supernatural forces are unleashed, Sol is forced to confront his demons.

The book is very thrilling and makes you want to read on. I personnally think that the major themes are alcoholism, dyslexia and strong supernaturalism.

I think this book is suitable for people over 15 years of age only, otherwise you might end up hurling yourself off the top of the stairs in frustation due to the confusing plot of the book.

This is only a good read if you are boring and have nothing else to do with your time.
