5.0 out of 5 stars solid soul
For those who may only know R&B legends The Whispers from the Babyface-penned hit "Rock Steady," circa 1987, this collection will be an eye-opener. The Whispers have been making consistent, soulful music for over three decades. The "Greatest Hits" collection covers a good chunk of their best material from the mid 1970s up to the early 1990s...

5.0 out of 5 stars solid soul, January 15, 2003
This review is from: The Whispers - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
For those who may only know R&B legends The Whispers from the Babyface-penned hit "Rock Steady," circa 1987, this collection will be an eye-opener. The Whispers have been making consistent, soulful music for over three decades. The "Greatest Hits" collection covers a good chunk of their best material from the mid 1970s up to the early 1990s. The vocals are always smooth and the musical styles range from Philly soul to disco to electro-funk to quiet storm. It's a historic and excellent look back at what music sounded like before hip-hop became the grammar of R&B music.

Highlights include "(Olivia) Lost and Turned Out," a live concert favorite (and possibly the smoothest vocals ever on a song about prostitution), "And The Beat Goes On," a 1980 disco hit sampled by rapper Will Smith in his hit "Miami," the aforementioned "Beat," and the Gary Taylor-penned "Just Gets Better With Time."

Some of the tracks are a little dated ("Contageous," "One For the Money") but all possess the careful craftsmanship and understated but soulful vocals that have made The Whispers popular over the years. If you're a casual fan, buy this without hesitation. If you're a serious fan, this is a good place to start.

5.0 out of 5 stars A major collection from a major group, January 14, 2001
This review is from: The Whispers - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I've always felt The Whispers were underrated. They can speed it up or slow down and sound equally impressive.

Gotta admit "And the Beat Goes On" is one of the all-time best dance songs and I was glad they put the long version on here.

"Rock Steady" and "It's a Love Thing" are also epic grooves. I also enjoyed the slow ballads, particularly "Lady."

Just a great collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Keep On Lovin' Meeeeeeee......, June 18, 2002
This review is from: The Whispers - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
One of many tight, catchy grooves on a flawless collection of hits from one of the most consistent and beloved soul groups of all times. Led by the outstanding co-lead vocals of Walter and Scotty Scott, The Whispers never miss a beat and their work never sounds dated or embarrassing. "Olivia (Lost and Turned Out)" is another stunner with it it's complex arrangement, intricate harmonies and timeless story of an innocent girl being pimped by a "wolf in lamb's clothing". The Whispers haven't released any new material in several years, but this hits collection is more than able to fill the void until they bless us with another batch of classic soul gems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent collection!!!!!!!, March 6, 2005
This review is from: The Whispers - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I have gotten several copies of this album, the CD and cassette collections, to play at home and in my car, the past several years! But this is a magnificent representation of their music career of 2 decades of hits! The Whispers were willing to update their sound every album they did according to the trends of the moment, yet pulled it off. And The Beat Goes On is still funky, but so are underrated songs like Olivia, All The Way, Contagious, Innocent and others. Rock Steady still rocks a strong 18 years later! Lady is still a beautiful love ballad. I still like the dramatic yet funky instrumental section of Keep on Lovin' Me after the second chorus, which provides body to the song. Even the 3 offerings from 1990's More Of The Night showed the Whispers still in top form, a rarity that they can match with longtime groups The Temptations, the Four Tops and Kool and The Gang. Capitol did a fine job collecting their Solar and Capitol Records hits for this 75-minute album!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hits Collection Just Gets Better With Time., September 4, 2002

This review is from: The Whispers - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
In the game of r&b, male vocal groups are a dime a dozen, but the Whispers were among the few who distinguished themselves from the fly-by-night pretenders. They had memorable songs that were well sung, with hooks strong enough to sink Jaws. Who could forget the infectious funk of "Rock Steady," the head-bobbing classic "And the Beat Goes On," or the dynamite "Just Gets Better with Time?" The Scott Twins and Co. are well-represented on this excellent compilation, which features 17 good reasons why you need to discover this group if you haven't done so already. Some groups have soul. Others have attitude. The Whispers have both.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Whispers Greatest Hits, May 17, 2004
This review is from: The Whispers - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This is my favorite cd. The whipers have good beats and sing very good as well, how come they are thought of very little. They deserve much more for this musical masterpiece.

Highlights of this cd are: Living together(In sin), And the beat goes on, Its a love thing, Tonight( my favorite song on here) and Rock steady.

The Whispers changed musical styles all the time but never failed to get me dancin. There are no bad songs on here. If you like R and B you will love this. I am only fourteen and I like this music. Pick this up right away. You wont be dissapointed.
