Singer Chris McNulty's "Whispers the Heart" is so well performed and arranged that you'll play it several times in a row after you buy it. Her CD zooms off to a great start with Michel Legrand's "Summer Me, Winter Me," Bachrach and David's "Make It Easy on Yourself" and Leonard Bernstein's "Lonely Town." You'll love her treatments of Irving Berlin's "How Deep Is the Ocean," Antonio Carlos Jobim's "If You Never Come to Me" and "I Should Care" by Cahn, Stordahl and Weston. The weak parts of the CD are Miss McNulty's own compositions, which aren't on the same level as the standards she performs so well. The same problem is present with "When Love Was You and Me" by Thad Jones and Abbey Lincoln. It's not that these are bad tunes or performed poorly; they're not. The performance is excellent throughout. McNulty's voice is a real gift, and the arrangements are very interesting. The standards she sings and the way she sings them will remind you of Dena DeRose, which puts her in fine company. Not having heard Chris before, I'm glad I got the chance. I look forward to her next recording and plan to take a look at the five CDs she recorded before this.
