5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting, fun and sensual read
Steven Rugala always had wondered my his mother hated him the most out of all his other siblings, was it something he did as a child or was it because of his looks. It has always worried him, so when she started to show him attention he ate it up, but it also came at the time he was starting to notice the beautiful Regina Preston.

The book starts out good. I liked that it wasn't a quick read and the sex scenes were decent. There were a few things about this story that really bothered me. The first, Regina gets physically beaten up entirely too much. The first time really upset me as it by a co-worker who wants their relationship to go to the next level, when she resists he beats her up. Then she speaks to him as if nothing happened at work the next day. He then assaults her a second time, this time at the office. Regina then goes on to suffer a few more brutal attacks. I was also annoyed by her yes I want you, no I don't want you, yes I can trust you, no I can't trust you, relationship with Steve. They were on and off so much that I found myself hoping they'd stay off. Also, we never found out what the mystery thing that happened to Regina as a child was. Whatever it was made her family crazy protective of her. Then again, perhaps the book does reveal it, but I'd lost interest by then.

Steven Rugala always had wondered my his mother hated him the most out of all his other siblings, was it something he did as a child or was it because of his looks. It has always worried him, so when she started to show him attention he ate it up, but it also came at the time he was starting to notice the beautiful Regina Preston.

Regina has always had feelings for the sexy and aloof Steven with his cool gray eyes and deep controlled voice, but she wondered has he ever noticed her. He was constantly around the petite blond co-worker, would he be interested in dating an African American woman. Regina was going to take her chances and ask him out as soon as she got a chance.

Whispers from the heart is an amazing page turner with passion, romance, suspense, and murder. I think it's one of the best IR romances I have read this year. I enjoyed it from page one to the end. The only bad thing I have to say is I thought the characters feel in bed too quickly, but besides that I throughly enoyed this IR romance.

2.0 out of 5 stars I can do just a bit beter, February 17, 2005
This review is from: Whispers from the Heart (Paperback)
I was really ready to read this book. I was excited till it came. But when I opened it, it wasn't the read I expected it to be. I think I would have liked the story to start off when Gina and Steve first started working together. It was just wam bam I'm in love with you man. Also I think that there was way to much time inbetween the fights. I mean who waits three weeks to contact somebody after you have a supirse meeting with thier parent(s) come on now. The ending was great, but the middle needed to be more realistic. Also she should have brought the baby into it more. If Steve was talking about children, and Regina knew that she was going to have a baby, it should have been brought out and not just in half a page.
Overall I hope she does better and writes a GOOD book on Chris and Felicia.

It seemed to me that the relationship moved a little too fast in the beginning, but once the story got going good it was alright. I liked this book and I am hoping there will be one for Chris and Felicia in the making.

2.0 out of 5 stars You Need a Proofreader!, May 14, 2005

Didn't anyone else have a problem with the fact this book was riddled with errors? Or is it that there aren't enough readers who recognize that books should be grammatically correct? There are words left out of sentences, gross grammatical errors, misspellings, even words that don't exist! (I dare you to find a definition for 'viverent')I'm sure there's a story there somewhere, but to have to mentally edit every page is annoying. Unfortunately, I'm afraid the people who edited this book didn't recognize all of the errors, and I feel that this publishing house needs to hire a more meticulous editor if they would like to be taken seriously.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hmmm..., September 8, 2004
This review is from: Whispers from the Heart (Paperback)
I agree with the last review. I like the author. I like her last book. Yet this book didn't please me as much. It pleased me enough where I read it in one day and want to read her next book that comes out, but with this book I was left with wanting more. I also agree when the last reviewer was saying how the heroines in Valyan's novels are light with nice hair and so on..It does make me feel bad to read interracial novels with heroines like that, not just in this book but other interracial novels have been like that too, b/c I know I'm not light, with straight hair, and stick slim and as a result can't relate physically to the heroine. Yet, when a novel is good, who cares how the heroine looks. It's when a novel is not as good that a reader starts to notice other negative things.
The action in this novel was good, great, but I didn't feel or sometimes understand why the characters were together. Yeah, the sex was good, but what were doing for each other emotionally. The action kind of over took the romance. I wish they would have gotten to know each other before sleeping or kissing each other.
I liked the ending of this book and enjoyed all the other characters in the book. Hope that Chris and Felicia get their own novel. I also can't wait for Unspoken Promises to come out.

1.0 out of 5 stars Panders to every cliche and stereotype out there, November 16, 2007

This review is from: Whispers from the Heart (Paperback)
Rarely have I read a book that I had such a visceral reaction to. "Whispers from the Heart" contains every cliché and stereotype out there about African American women and their sexuality. It is also contains behavior and dialogue that is so unrealistic, trite and immature that I wondered how this book was published in the first place.

Regina, a smart, successful, African American businesswoman falls heads over heels in love with Steven, an Italian American co-worker. It is "love at first sight" for both of them.

As most readers know, this is a device used to explain why the main characters fall into bed with one another at the drop of a hat. It is not a device that I am fond of, but in capable hands it might work. It doesn't here.

Regina and Steven have sex. This supposedly smart and capable business woman has sex with him at a company picnic, the storage closet at the office and her office when there is a floor full of people outside the door. What smart, successful businesswoman in corporate America would do that?

Regina and Steven can not be bothered to think about HIV, pregnancy or STDs that may be contracted during unprotected sex. It is one thing to take a chance on someone you know and love. These people have had at most two conversations before they fall into bed with each other.

The "mystery" surrounding why Steven's mother does not love him is predictable and silly. Regina's attitudes are immature and unbelievable. She has abusive friends and family members that physically and mentally abuse her. But it is okay because those "friends" are hurting. Steven is little better. The number of times that he kicked in doors in order to talk to Gina are too numerous to mention.

This is an overly long, dramatic story with two characters that did not ring true. Save your money.

I really tried to get into this book. I actually struggle to finish it. Steven was just so unlikeable and Regina was uninteresting. This thing with his mother went way over the top. I'm sorry I really wanted to like it, butI didn't

This review is from: Whispers from the Heart (Paperback)
As A whole, I enjoyed reading Whispers From the Heart. Once I resigned myself that I was reading one of the stereotypical drugstore romances that we used to tease Fabio for being the cover model of , I got into it. I must admit, the love scenes were well written however, I was surprised how quickly Gina gave it up. I also felt that she could have been a little stronger as a heroine. In addition, I found myself being severely distracted by the typos, lack of subject- verb agreement, transposed sentences etc. I mean I could overlook one or 2 typos and I am certainly no Strunk or White but damn! Did anybody proofread this book before it was published? The publishing company and the author should hang their heads in shame over that one. Aside from that I found this book to be an enjoyable read.
