Book Description

Silhouette Intimate Moments December 1, 2004

When strange things began happening at her isolated home, lonely widow Kayla Thorne turned to handyman Paul Fitzgerald for protection. But was that a mistake? Because Paul was not only an ex-cop, he was an ex-convict--though he swore he'd been framed. Yet if he was so eager to prove his innocence, why was he spending time fixing her house, instead?

Paul seemed intent on gaining her trust--and as the mysterious dangers escalated, Kayla needed someone to keep her safe. Paul was the perfect protector, because he needed nothing from her...or did he? Suddenly Kayla wondered just why Paul had come to her--and how close he meant to get....

More About the Author

I've been an actress/singer, a disk jockey, a film reviewer. I've written for television and newspapers but for the past many years I've been writing Romance novels. Much fun; also lots of hard work!

I live in the hills of Silver Lake, near downtown Los Angeles, with my two cats, Gilbert and Sullivan. From my office I get to look out at trees and mountains. I am a very lucky woman.

4.0 out of 5 stars Whispers in the Night will sweep you away, January 10, 2005
This review is from: Whispers in the Night (Silhouette Intimate Moments) (Intimate Moments) (Mass Market Paperback)
Whispers in the Night was a gripping read. I felt the book transcended the usual confines of a category romance with the depth of character exploration. The heroine has hid from her own innate sexuality by selecting a relationship with an elderly man who provides for her comfort and makes little in the way of demands on her. The past hurts of her chaotic childhood are all too true of those children who fall through the cracks in dysfunctional and dangerous families. She's hiding from life and the death of her husband, and is staying at a cottage in the Catskills where she meets the hero.

The Hero comes with his own deep issues. Wrongly accused of corruption as a cop, he spends time in jail, only to be later released. The coping strategies developed in jail still run deep, and he fights them every step of the way, as he falls in love with the heroine. In the end, they prove stronger, and he stands on the verge of loosing the love that has become his chance for redemption. You are left at one point not knowing if they'll succeed, even though intuitively you know the story will end well. In my opinion, when a book draws you in that way and allows you to suspend all conventions including the one that there will be a happy ending, the author has succeeded and gone above and beyond in her craft.

The villain is not easily identified, but once he's located, everything falls into place nicely.

I would heartily recommend this, particularly for the character study and the pacing. I liked the way the author let the relationship unfold rather than rush it due to convention
