More About the Author

Raquel writes across several genres including YA Steampunk and Gothic Mystery. Always looking for another adventure in which to partake she is never seen without her notebook.

As a teen she couldn't get enough Bradbury, Asimov, Poe, or Matheson. They informed her love of science fiction, mystery, and thrillers. One of her favorite stories is Something Wicked This Way Comes. It changed the way she looked at scenery and the world around her.

After finishing school, marrying, and starting a family, Raquel realized she'd fallen away from her love of the written word. She began in earnest in 2000 to hone her craft and connect with other authors and book lovers.

She connected with an agent and after signing with him, sold two series. One, a suspense series that also sold into foreign translation, and the other a dark gothic mystery. Currently working on YA Steampunk, she endeavors to bring the same edgy characters and thrilling pace to the project.

Gothic romance. I thought the genre had died a timely death. After all, how can you create a damsel in distress in a modern setting? Raquel Byrnes proved it could be done and then some! Whispers On Shadow Bay has all the trademarks of the classics. It has a masterful blend of atmosphere, gloomy shadows and a mysterious, dark hero...without sacrificing any of the trademarks I've come to expect in a Byrnes' novel... a strong heroine, a fascinating setting, multi-dimensional characters and realistic details. I have only one question to ask. When is the next book out?

A blend of a "who-dunnit" and inspirational romance - darkness and light - hopelessness and strength - gypsy and families of affluence... Whispers on Shadow Bay has it all.

This book reads as a "sit on the edge of your chair" type of story that I found delightful. Up until the very end, I was held in suspense as to what really happened on the island, years prior, when the main character lost family members.

The characters felt real, the story world is well rounded, and the ending is beautifully satisfying. There was only one small thin plot thread, which was left dangling in my mind. That is, why was the caretaker left with scratches and bruises on several occasions? (I have my suspicions, though I'm not sure.) However, this didn't take away from my enjoyment of the plot. I'm giving it two thumbs up.

Warning: This is not a book you want to start late at night, because you won't want to go to bed!

Take a little bit of Dark Shadows, add in some of Victoria Holt's Gothic story telling magic, and mix well with a Christian Heroine and you'll have Raquel Byrnes's Whispers on Shadow Bay Hall. I grew up reading Ms. Holt's books and rushing home from school to watch Dark Shadows. I know Gothic, I like Gothic, I jumped at the chance to read this book and I loved it. All the elements are there. A shrouded brooding mansion sitting on a cliff complete with hidden rooms and passages, A young girl running from her past, and a handsome hero with a dark secret. Whispers on Shadow Bay Hall is spooky. Whispers on Shadow Bay Hall brushes against the occult but never crosses to the dark side. Whispers on Shadow Bay Hall has an ending that I didn't see coming until the author shoved it in my face. Whispers on Shadow Bay Hall gets 5 stars!

Whispers on Shadow Bay is hard to put down. It is intriguing, mysterious and romantic, unfolding in my mind like a movie. The sort of book you look up from and can't believe how much time has passed. Ms. Byrnes puts you into the setting, into the action, into the intrigue as though you were a character in her wonderful tale. Rosetta, Simon, his daughter, indeed each character, so full of flaws and strengths, struggling within themselves to move forward from their pasts, yearning for a new life but unsure how to get there. All amid a beguiling mystery that puts everyone in the position of wondering who to trust, who to protect, who to be wary of. Often I know 'who done it' long before a novel's end. I was ecstatic to not only be unsure but to be so wrong! Great unexpected bad guy! Definitely the sort of book I'd like to see a sequel to!

I normally read historical fiction. I especially like the older Gothic books (without vampires, etc.--just spooky big house with good suspense & setting from a long time ago such as the Zebra Gothic books from the 80s & 90s) & also Victoria Holt's books. This modern day story kept me on the edge of my seat...I couldn't put it down. It had a big spooky house & plenty of mystery. I did not guess how the book was going to end or who the villain was. I have not read any books by this author before but hope she writes more like this one. Her other books sound different than this, but I'm going to check them out since this author is such a good one. The other thing I liked about this book was that it was clean with some Christian aspects, but still very interesting.

I loved this book. I read the authors first three suspense books and loved them. While reading reviews on this book someone compared it to a Victoria Holt book. I grew up reading Victoria Holt. I would have to say I totally agree with that review. Byrnes has written a modern day gothic Christian Fiction that reads like a Victoria Holt book. I didn't think it was possible to find this type of book today. I was really in this book. I loved the writing, the characters, the big creaky mansion and the suspense. I couldn't quit turning pages and yet hated to see it end. I hope the author continues writing this style of book.

Whispers on Shadow Bay is a remarkable read. It has all the visual descriptions and intrigue to keep the reader glued to the storyline. From the mysterious island, to the voices, as well as Simon and Rose, the audience is fascinated by every sudden movement that revolves in the house. Ms. Byrnes creates a spellbinding read that draws readers into the center of everything, keeping them frozen until the final conclusion. All the characters are in-depth, and Simon's little daughter makes the story wonderfully told and begging to be read again and again.
