After moving to Houston when her dad got a promotion Sarah Darnell finds herself trying to solve a mystery that's four years old. This book was very real to me. It was like the characters jumped out at me. Sarah is the new girl in the neighborhood, so she is trying to make friends, but when she finds some very strange things out about the house that they just moved into she is very disturbed. After meeting the guy of her dreams she is positive that nothing could go wrong. Man was she wrong...

4.0 out of 5 stars A great and exciting book!, March 20, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Whispers from the Dead (Paperback)
After an accident that nearly caused her to drown, Sarah Darnell has always felt as if there was an unknown spirit that followed her wherever she went. Sarah expected for the eerie spirit to stop following her after her dad's transfer, which caused the family to move from Missouri to Houston. However, once she steps inside her new house, a cry for help can be heard in Spanish. As what was told to her by therapists, these spirits of hers can only be from her imagination after her near death experience. Yet, these images that are sent to her along with the cries are definitely real, and as she helps the young spirit, she is also able to solve the mystery that lies within it.
I found this book to be a definite page-turner because it keeps the reader alert with new surprises on every page. Not to mention that the mystery wasn't at all dragging and the plot was right to the point with Sarah's problems and visions. In addition to the simplicity of the book, I also found the book easy to understand. Nevertheless, I think that others with find this book exciting, as well as captivating to read.
There are several intense moments in this story, especially the parts when the spirit tries her best to reach Sarah, or when the spirit cries sadly for help. The author pens in great description, great enough that it allows the reader to imagine every detail...

This review is from: Whispers From The Dead (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) (Intrepid Linguist Library) (School & Library Binding)
This book is about a girl named Sarah. Her family decides to move to this huge house that was on a beautiful neighbor hood. What Sarah's family didn't know was that someone was murdered in the house before they moved. Sarah found this out first hand when she starts hearing voices and seeing things such as puddles of blood on the floor. When she lived in her old town she almost drowned when she went swimming, Ever since she has been linked to another world. She feels as if a dark shadow was following her and when she moved into the house the Spanish voices whispering to her for help. Sarah finds out that the voice she was hearing in the house was from the girl who was murdered. She from there tries to find out what really happened in the murder.

The things I liked about this book were how the detail of the book helped you see and feel and hear what Sarah did. I liked this because it really gets you into the story and you feel as if it were you, not Sarah. One thing I didn't like about the book was how it was kind of boring. Usually when the beginning is boring the person never wants to read on to find out what happens, but I advice everyone to read on because it is a really good book!

People who would like this book would be someone who likes a little mystery or somewhat scary books, even maybe suspense or thriller novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, April 4, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Whispers from the Dead (Paperback)
This Book was Terrific!!!!! It was REALLY good!!! It was the third book i have ever read of Joan Lowery Nixon's books. I say it was probably the second best!!!! (my favorite was "The Other Side Of Dark" so far, check it out, it is the BEST) This book contains some scary parts so if you get scared easily, please don't read this book (unless you can concer not being scared).
This book is about a sixteen-year-old girl named Sarah. When coming close to death in the water, she believes some sort of shadow is following her. The docter says that it is a "hauted feeling" and that she needs to concer her fear (in this case of drowning). But, for Sarah this isn't easy. But, finally the feeling starts to wear off and one day she thinks it is gone. Her father has been given a promotion that involves them having to move to Houston, Texas. When looking for a house he was for some reason giving a low payment on a big one. So, they move into that house. As soon as Sarah sets foot in the door, she knows something is weird about this house.Pretty soon she hears a voice saying "help me" in Spanish. Sarah's father comes home one day and tells them why they had gotten this house for such a low price...two years ago a murder had taken place in the very house they are living in. Read on as Sarah unravels the mystery about what REALLY happened at the house that day of the murder. But, will history repeat itself, this time involving Sarah as the next victim?
This book is REALLY GOOD, and I suggest that you read it and find out what happens. It is full of suspense, and keeps you on your toes.
