5.0 out of 5 stars Almost As Good As Pro 78SE
I have owned the Pro 78SE for over two years now. It has served me well. The Pro 68SE is built on Pro 78 RevC platform.I bought this as a backup. Like the title says, it is almost as good as the Pro 78SE. The detection distance is a little shorter, but still strong enough to give advanced warning. This review is from: Whistler Pro-68se High Performance Radar Detector (Electronics)
For those of you who suffer false alarms, be sure to turn POP mode off(This I learned from calling Whistler, and speaking to an engineer). If you do, the false alarms, will all but cease.

This detector is relatively quiet, even when left in Highway mode. We do not have X Band enforcement in Florida that I know of, and therefore I disabled it. Yes you will not defeat all false signals, especially if an X Band signal is to strong (will show up as K Band). However, you will experience the same thing with Pro 78SE, should you decide to spend more money.

This is a great detector. If you do not need the voice prompts, and I am not sure anyone does, then I would definitely recommend this to anyone. Again the distance is almost comparable to their more expensive Pro Series. The only recommendation I would have for this unit, would be to save the brightness setting, which changes every time you restart the detector.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice product, October 7, 2010

This is my first radar detector and I'm not an expert on radar detectors but given its price I'm very happy with it so far. Almost all Ka band alarms (this is been said the most popular band in NY state) were true alarms. The unit doesn't show which direction the signal is coming from but either my lane or the opposite I saw a cop every time. There is only 2-3 instances so far I drove right by a police car and the unit didn't give any signal but I don't know if it's the unit's fault or the radars were off or the cops were using laser guns which they didn't point to my car. I use City 2 mode in the city and got constant K band alarms near the traffic lights (the product was good near automatic door openers so far unless you're driving right in front of them by a few yards). When I read about it, most of the traffic light sensors use K band signals, so I wouldn't call them as false alarms. My personal opinion is even if you have the most expensive radar detector, don't be stupid to go over 20-30 mph over the speed limit in the city, especially at night. Cops don't need a detector to see that you're flying. However, if you are buying this product for highway use, it's a very nice product. One of the online reviews call pro-68se as the best radar detector under 100$.

Lastly, I like the power cable's length, windshield mount is very sturdy. So far, so good.

Don't forget to keep your eyes open for laser and pop detection. What I watched on youtube is that laser detection only needs 1-2 seconds to read your speed.Again, even if you have the most expensive detector, you wouldn't have much chance against laser.

It's an issue they (Whistler) should have been aware of when designing their detector(s). It's the windshield mount that's the issue. The detector slides and locks onto a metal tab on the windshield mount. The issue is after continuously removing the detector after use the detector doesn't "lock" into place on the mount, which cause it to slide off. Kind of annoying after a while but maybe it was just an issue with "my" detector. Other than that it works just as it's designed to, alert you of cops running radar which it did for me on several occasions saving me from a hefty fine and points on my record!

I'm happy with this radar detector. It is fairly easy to use and seems to give a good deal of warning. It has the features I want, although it lacks some fancy features of other more expensive detectors. It's quite modestly priced. It's a little bit difficult to get off the bracket (especially if the bottom of your windshield is hard to reach), but I do it twice a day, so it's no big deal. I would certainly recommend it to anyone looking for a moderately priced unit.

I've been using this unit for 8 months now. I drive mostly highway in SC. Initially there were a lot of false Ka band alerts but all falses stopped when I turned off POP. Since then it has been pretty consistent. Always detects cops that have their radar turned on. Just wish the unit had better range. It usually gives me an alert 1-2 seconds before I see the cop, barely enough to slow down. Despite the short range this unit has saved me a bunch of times now. It found the unit to be practically useless when I traveled to Atlanta and Charlotte .. laser :(

4.0 out of 5 stars Great unit- could be just a tad quicker, February 8, 2011

20,000 miles later I am still using enjoying my pro-68se. I of course use it only where allowed by law and it is a quality unit. For the price I have been very satisfied. Yes it falses at some stores, and other odd places from time to time and it could be a little more sensitive (thats what my girlfriend says about me too...). You still have to drive smart, be aware of the road ahead and the type of terrain you are dealing with. I am not a chronic speeder, but it is still nice to have a reminder to "check your speed" when coming up on radar. I don't think it would save you if you are the "need for speed" type... in fact nothing will, and I hope you grow up and start driving like an adult- anyone can speed and weave in and out of traffic... it is not impressive!
If you are like me and find yourself going a little too fast every now and then, this might just save your bacon... if it only works once its worth the price.

Update: My Pro68 is still working well, and I wanted to add that the folks at Whistler are tops at customer service. After recently posting questions about my RD on a forum I was contacted by a Whistler rep who addressed all my concerns. If only I had received the same great service on my Redline detector that cost 6 times as much.

4.0 out of 5 stars I like it, my wife loves it., February 6, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Whistler Pro-68se High Performance Radar Detector (Electronics)
I have had a radar detector for years, and pay close attention both while driving, and to enforcement changes. I usually drive in excess of the limit from +10 -> +15 mph, because in my state, state law doesn't put points on your licence until 15+ over. So while local municipalities enforce to about +10, out in the county, You can drive past Deputies at 69 in a 55 and they won't pull you.

Recently, my wife started driving a lot more, and while I have a Bell vector 995, I was tired of loaning it to her, but of course she had her complaints about it, specifically the 'tech' display (displays the frequency detected to the 100th of a mhz), and the voice alert. So I searched for a detector that was more her speed. I found this guy, with reviews almost as good as my Vector (radartest.com), and as good as the Whister Pro 78se & Pro 695 (same electronics detection package). It basically is a unit w/ the same core detection package (antenna & detection software), but has all the 'extras' (like compass, LED alphanumeric display, etc) taken out. And happens to be $50-100 less for it. As far as I can tell, the reviews are dead on, it's incredibly sensitive for the price, though not quite at the upper units threshold.

Whatev! she loves it, and I don't have to switch radar detectors when I switch cars anymore. I am very confident about it's performance, and detection threshold, though it isn't nearly as good as the 995 about false alerts. (driving behind somebody with a Cobra makes you reach for the mute!) But for the cost, it works, and works well!
