I received this book as a gift from my art teacher for my high-school graduation. I only knew a few works of Whistler then, like Arrangement in Grey and Black: The Artist's Mother--which is an amazing piece of art, but not as sensual and beautiful as other portraits that are abound in this volume.
As a teenager I adored this book, which discusses the role of painted portrait for socialites of the time, and speaks the fashion language of cloth, hem and colors for each portrait. |
