Never miss an alert. Click to enlarge.

4.41 x 2.84 x 1.35 inches and just 5.6 ounces.

This unit features Whistler's low-profile "alert periscope" LEDs that flash when the unit alarms.

Battery Powered Operation
The unit can provide approximately 15 hours of laser/radar detection on three rechargeable batteries (included). It's handy for those who frequently switch cars, or use rentals, or who just don't want a power cord dangling over the dash.

A power cord is included, which will both provide power to the detector and recharge the unit's batteries.

Blue Backlit Text Display
The XTR-440's blue backlit text display provides distinct visual confirmation of signals detected, signal strength, and indicates engaged modes of operation.

Twin Alert Periscopes
Whistler's Low Profile Alert Periscopes provide an added attention getting visual alert. The two extra LEDs flash on and off when the unit alarms to provide a unique visual alert.

Selectable Total Band Protection
This unit provides complete band coverage of all Laser, Radar (X, K, and Ka bands), VG-2, and Safety Radar bands. You can select which bands to leave on or off based on your detection needs.

360 Degree Protection
Units with 360 protection detect signals from all radar, laser, VG-2 and safety radar systems wherever they come from; front, rear or from the side.

3 City Modes/Highway Mode
Highway mode provides full audio and visual warning of laser/radar systems while maintaining full sensitivity, and is the default setting of Whistler laser/radar detectors. City mode helps reduce the annoyance of automatic door openers and burglar alarm alerts by providing an initial alert (same distance as Highway Mode) then remaining quiet unless the signal strength becomes very strong. When the signal increases the unit will alert briefly to notify you of the change in signal strength.

Filter Mode
There are times when a radar detector can emit the same frequency as police radar and can cause your detector to falsely alarm. Sometimes a detector can display a signal when picking up another radar detector in vehicle close by. The Whistler Filter Mode option provides a method to study the signal and verify if it's legitimate police radar or a false alert from another detector.

High Gain Lens
A high gain optical lens provides increased sensitivity and field of view for leading-edge laser detection.

Tone Alerts
Provides distinct audio warnings for X, K, Ka band radar, safety radar, laser and VG-2.

Stay Alert
Whistler's exclusive Stay Alert feature tests your alertness on long trips.

Seven Dim/Dark Mode
Dim/Dark Mode reduces the illumination of the display. The backlighting can be programmed to be illuminated all the time, only when alarming or choices in between.

Quiet/Auto Quiet Modes
Pressing QUIET before a signal is detected engages Auto Quiet Mode, which automatically reduces the audio level after the initial warning to a low audio level setting. Pressing QUIET during a radar/laser encounter silences audio alerts, while allowing visual alerts to keep you informed.

Alert Priority
When two or more signals are received at the same time, the alert priority is: Laser, VG-2, Speed Radar, Safety Radar.

Example: If X band is alerting, then suddenly a VG-2 signal is detected, the VG-2 warning will override the X band alert.

Setting Saver
Setting Saver saves your personalized settings so that when the detector is turned off and then on again, you do not have to re-enter them.

Selectable Auto Shut Off
Auto Shut Off Mode automatically shuts off the detector. The timer is reset when the detector is turned off, the power cord is unplugged, or a button is pressed. This helps save batteries. The detector will alert you with an audible and visual warning before it shuts off.

Safety Warning System--SWS
This relatively new radar is not for speed detection at all, it is used to keep you informed of highway safety. Transmitters are installed and programmed (for example: in emergency vehicles) to make you aware of possible situations that may require your attention, such as: ambulance vehicles that are moving or stationary, road hazards ahead, road construction delays or detours, etc.

VG-2 Cloaking
The VG-2, also known as a "radar detector detector," is a special receiver used by police to detect signals radiated by a radar detector. Thanks to Whistler's patented VG-2 cloaking technology, your detector will remain invisible to VG-2 detection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cordless radar on a budget, May 27, 2010

This review is from: Whistler XTR-440 Laser/Radar Detector Battery Operated with Built in Battery Charger with Blue Text Display (Electronics)
I just received the Whistler XTR 440 and I am impressed at what you get for the money. The unit itself is easy to operate, and full of features found in much higher priced detectors. Visual alerts are conveyed by a blue-backlit LCD text display whose backlighting is adjustable to a variety of configurations. For example, it can be set to appear briefly during alerts and mode changes and remain off the rest of the time to save battery power. The Whistler XTR-440 runs on three AA rechargeable Ni-MH (nickel metal-hybride) batteries. The batteries (which are included) must be charged for about six hours before you use the unit the first time, and the only way to charge them is with the power cord that's included. I suggest buying an ac-dc adapter so you can charge the unit from an electrical outlet indoors instead of leaving it plugged into the car(cigarette lighter plug) any time it needs a charge. It has an auto shut-off feature which kills the power after a user-adjustable delay, so you won't come back to the car and find the detector down for the count. I'm not getting a lot of "false" alarms either, so far I'm impressed. The XTR-440 offers two filter modes to limit false alarms. These progressively increase its resistance to common sources of falses, particularly the poorly shielded local oscillators of older Cobra radar detectors, which seem to be everywhere. I run my 440 on Filter 1 default and with X band off, since New Jersey and Ohio are the only states where X-band radar continues to be found in any number and I don't live there, and it makes for a quiet ride. Finally, The only real difference between this unit (XTR-440) and the higher priced XTR-540 (about $125-$150) is the 540's built in digital compass, so if you can live without that, save the money and get the XTR-440.

Detection is mediocre; that's par for the course for Whistler. Don't believe reviews that say that its detection range is on par with Passport. It's not. It's adequate, but not as good as a $500 detector. You get what you pay for.

The battery life is TERRIBLE. Try 45 minutes (!) of battery life compared to 8 hours with the 540. Sad, just sad. Both detectors feature illegible displays when put against daylight. "Periscope" LEDs do nothing to alert you, although max volume is fair enough when listening to music at relatively soft level.

2.0 out of 5 stars Screen is terrible., August 2, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Whistler XTR-440 Laser/Radar Detector Battery Operated with Built in Battery Charger with Blue Text Display (Electronics)
First off, I'll say this Radar Detector works admirably. However, for me it was a "must return" item.

The problem was that I could barely get to read the LCD screen on this device during daylight hours. The screen was impossible to read if the sun was high in the sky. The alerts and chirps work fine. It alerted me to the presence of a speed trap on multiple occasions. However, that only does you a little bit of good if you can't make out the words on the screen.

Another pet peeve is the "auto off" alarm. After 60-90 minutes, the unit turns itself off. However, the alert at this time is the loudest and most panicked alarm you'll hear from the device. It seriously scares you. I'd prefer a chirp every 10-15 seconds for a minute or two then an alert as it shuts off. Instead you get an ear piercing high pitched siren like alarm that seriously will startle you ever time.

So, I was not happy. Unit works well enough for a bargain unit under $100, however the poor screen quality made it a poor choice.
