Departure from most of M. Seeley's mysteries.,
By Tiger Lily "book store owner" (Athens, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Whistling Shadow (Hardcover)
I can't live without Mabel Seeley's The Listening House and love her other mysteries as well but The Whistling Shadow is the least enjoyable, in my opinion.
Rather than have an plucky young woman in Had-I-But-Known peril with lighthearted romance and a creepy murderer waiting in the wings, this plot involves a widow who, in her grief, goes to find her dead son's secret wife, who turns out to be trailer trash, dumb and pregnant. The girl moves in with the widow but appears to have been followed by her trailer trash, no-good boyfriend. Threats are made. I just found the whole thing pretty depressing.

This is a very dated book, almost enough to bewilder young readers. The concept was good, characters well delineated, but so dated that I probably wouldn't recommend this book, except to realize how much times have changed.
