4.0 out of 5 stars A very good indie rock with some great production - close to being classic - genre fans will probably like it a lot - 4.5 stars, January 7, 2006
This review is from: White Belt Is Not Enough (Audio CD)
Moggs' "The White Belt Is Not Enough" isn't a "classic" (it comes close, though), but it definitely has many good characteristics. The first great thing about it is that the production is fantastic - everything is crisp and clear. The second is that the musicianship is really good - the drums, especially, are very fun to listen to. Actually, the drums are more front-and-center than anything else (the singer, the guitars...etc). It has a real "raw" sound to it, like it was recorded live. The album as a whole is essentially an instrumental affair, though a singer comes in every now and then. When he/she does come in, he/she is pretty good (they have good voices). There are no bad songs here, though some are noticably better than others (the first three tracks are the best I'd say). There aren't any lyrics to be found here, and they aren't really missed anyway. It makes for some pretty good background music, too. I don't know if I could call it a classic, but as a whole indie rock fans will probably like this a lot. Highly recommended!

Highlights include:

the entire album!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hope i get mogged, December 6, 2005
This review is from: White Belt Is Not Enough (Audio CD)
Good duo from around the San Fran Bay area. On Absolutely Kosher Records (Pinback, the Wrens, the Dead Science, Goblin Cock--hell yea!). Don't expect White Stripesesque dynamics in this duo. More along the lines of the whole dischordance of Shellac or the looping jangle of later-era Sonic Youth. The drumming of Miss Minor hones the striking guitar sound of Sir Plus into some fine songs on this record...most notably in Lynbrook and Interglacial Marriages. Other favorites include Take Take Take, arguably the tamest track on this album, and Disco, a blistering ode to dissonance. There is a certain restraint to the Moggs that the bands to whom they have been compared, like Unwound or even Jawbox, don't get across. Miss Minor takes most of the vocal credit on this album and has a sound slightly remniscent of Kim Gordon, though MM carries a whole lot more melody in these songs.

This album was produced totally analog to boot. I like this certain measure of integrity and it carries well in this album.

One of my top picks from 2005.
