Book Description

March 3, 2008
A book of delirious surfaces riding on obsessive rhythms and a long breath, Sarah Maclay's second full-length collection, almost entirely prose poems, is composed of sentences as serpentine and sinuous as they are prone to interruption from the fragmented consciousness of inner and external worlds. Inspired by everything from old record covers to mannequins, historical figures, street scenes, music, and myth, these dreamlike and inventive poems both extend and echo the sounds and sensibilities of her earlier work.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Ms. Maclay has a superb lyric gift, a remarkable imagistic clarity, and a constant sense of invention. Her recent prose poems- a departure for her- strike me as some of the most gracious and compelling of the genre. She is melding the concerns of her more fiercely lyric pieces with a more elongated music phrasing, and the result is miraculous. Sarah Maclay is without question an astonishingly gifted young poet; I believe she has a truly remarkable career ahead of her. Her poems have the fierce lyric clarity I've described above and a deep, rich impassionment that are both breathtaking. I am often stunned at the power, beauty, and profound originality of her work. --David St. John in Ploughshares

Sarah Maclay's The White Bride unpacks the trousseau of a figure seduced by black- its silence and lack- because she knows how 'Emptiness can fill, can electrify with touch... mouth on mouth: succulent ellipse.' In these poems of erotic apocalypse, language evokes and strokes 'the lush unspoken scream welling up from the center, lavish, unbearable, this moment, this.' These are poems ravished by language, betrothed to the world. --Angie Estes

The poems in The White Bride are charged with sensual intelligence, an irresistible alchemy of perception and feeling so that they are like spells from which we need not awake. Maclay's language is luminous, attentive, often stunning, and defies complacent reading. What a welcome voice hers is in the midst of so much contemporary poetry that chooses irony over intimacy and theory over the urgent longings of our lives. --Beckian Fritz Goldberg

4.0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Successor to "Whore", April 2, 2008
This review is from: The White Bride (Hardcover)
Sarah Maclay's "The White Bride" is what I have come to expect, as well as crave, in poetry... an elusive glimpse into a world beyond the immediately possible that ultimately disappears between one breath and the next, leaving me exhilarated and slightly confused.
