This product is well made and the finish is nice. However, it's smaller than I expected (although accurate to the measurements). The bottom plug (which you often see as some sort of plastic stopper) is glued-on felt. This would make it difficult to frequently open to take out change. It's very light as well.

I. What is a Maneki Neko?

A Maneki Neko goes by several different names in English. It is also known as the following: Welcoming Cat, Lucky Cat, Money Cat, or Fortune Cat. It is a traditional Japanese sculpture that is supposed to bring good luck. A raised right paw brings money/fortune, while a raised left paw brings people/customers. They are often used as piggy banks.

II. Why would I want this particular Maneki Neko?

It is exceptionally cute and well-made. The closed eyes and cherubic figure give it a very alluring expression. The symbols on its chest along with the two square talismans of red, black, and white give it a mystical quality. It is also an authentic Maneki Neko, having been made in Japan. This design also comes in other colors. Happy Cat, Maneki Neko Blk is one such variant.

III. Is there anything else I should know before buying this?

This Maneki Neko is a ceramic piggy bank, though it makes a great display item. It is very light, so it may be easily damaged from rough treatment. The talismans (squares of red, black, and white symbols) are actually stickers. The bottom of the sculpture has felt on it to protect it from being scratched. Don't be fooled though. This Maneki Neko is superb!

This little good luck kitty bank is not only absolutely adorable but...is well crafted and with it's sealed bottom it makes it more difficult for my daughter to take money from it as she her attempts to build a savings.

4.0 out of 5 stars cute kitty, December 23, 2011

it's very easy to zip past the product details. please be warned THIS IS SMALL. very cute, but small. I know i originally thought this was maybe a 7-10inch in height kitty, and realized nope, it's tiny. That said, the cat is still very cute. I appreciate the quality. It has 2 stickers on it, as opposed to being painted on it ,but that doesn't bother me. Any way all in all its a cute maneki neko bank and I find no issue with its quality. I think it'll make a decent addition to anyone with a collection of these special kitties.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute & hopefully lucky!, September 9, 2011

I ordered these and they came today. Very cute & what I expected. Time will tell if they're really lucky! Even if they aren't, they're cute. I wouldn't suggest actually using them as a bank but they will definitely look nice on a shelf.

I use this for decoration to get nostalgic for Japan. It usually sits on our mantle with other fun knickknacks from our travels. When it's ramen night, it sits on the table with our chopsticks.

This porcelain "lucky cat" is aesthetic and looks very good. Good quality. It's main weakness, however, is that it is made of very thin porcelain and is, as a result, quite fragile. This may be a problem for those who want to use it as a piggy bank (which is what is designed to be). For those who just desire to use it as a decoration, however, this should not be a problem.

First off- i didn't buy this little guy to use as a bank. I wanted him for my desk. He is SO CUTE and, in my opinion, the perfect size. He's much chubbier than he loks in the photos, which only adds to the cuteness. The width is about that of my fist and height is about the same. If you plan on using it as a bank, I'm sure the base "stopper" won't last very long, so you may want to put a rubber stopper in instead.

The absolute only thing I would frown upon is that the the boxes of kanji text on the sides (the red, black and white rectangles) are stickers, and the corners are peeling just a little. You can't tell, really, but I'm worried that over time they will fall off. The kanji on his belly (black circle) is painted on, so thats no prob.

I love him, I think he's adorable and the quality is great for the price. My favorite desk accessory.
