Book Description

June 15, 1999
That's what Taylor James' first love used to call her, referring to her creamy skin, blond hair, and mixed heritage. But that was before he dumped her without any explanation.

Now years later, Taylor is a hot TV journalist who made her mark by going undercover to expose a violent white supremacist group. And she's agreed to marry her boss, the powerful owner of the Wolf Television Network.

But that's if she survives until the wedding. The white supremacists are out of jail now and they want revenge--Taylor's blood. Yes, coping with death threats is hard--but not as hard as the reappearance of her first love, who wants her back.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

An ambitious biracial television reporter takes on a white-supremacist group in this thoughtless thriller set in Detroit. Pale-skinned, blonde reporter Taylor James uses her looks to infiltrate a white-supremacist group and break an important investigative story, but her darker-skinned colleagues resent her success and publicly question her "blackness." Her struggle for respect is compounded by her reluctant engagement to Philip Carter, the greedy, cynical owner of the network that employs her. When her first love comes to work at the same station, Taylor must choose between love and her career. A paradoxical character, Taylor insists that she is not sleeping her way to the top?and does just that, with a shallowness surprising even in a novel that tends to describe minor characters by hairstyle. The threat Taylor faces from the white supremacists is believable enough, but in the end it is impossible to care much about her or about this failed attempt to dramatize the difficulties facing people of mixed race.

From Library Journal

Penned by a television news writer in Detroit, this first novel is set at a local TV station in that multifaceted city. The station is part of Wolf TV Network, owned by one Philip Carter, handsome, strong, ruthless, and engaged to heroine Taylor James. Taylor's determined fight against racism stems from her personal heritage of being half white and half black. Her target for a number of years has been a white supremacist group that, at the start of the book, is rallying in Detroit, giving rise to violent protest and threats to Taylor's life. Moreover, Taylor's longtime lover returns to Detroit and wants her back, and there are secrets he knows about her fiance. Bowman has written a fast-paced story with a plausible scenario and plenty of action taken from today's headlines. It's an imaginative hot romance at breakneck speed. 5.0 out of 5 stars gripping from start to finish, October 17, 2000

This review is from: White Chocolate (Mass Market Paperback)
This book, White Chocolate, had me spellbound from the very first words. It has it all, suspense, intrigue, romance and the story moves along quickly. This was a fast read for me and I found myself wishing the book would just go on and on.While I was reading the book I had 2 friends take the time to read the backcover and they immediately started to read the first few pages. I had to pry the book out of their hands. Both friends definately wanted to read the book when I was finished. I can't recommend the book enough. We are an interracial family and it was especially nice to read a book specifically about interaccial families. I could only hope Ms.Atkins Bowman would continue other books using these same characters. Get the book, you won't be sorry!

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS WOULD MAKE A GREAT MOVIE!!!, March 2, 2001

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: White Chocolate (Hardcover)
After reading the first couple of pages in this book I was most definitely hooked! It was a wake up call to the real side of racial prejudice and hate towards minorities and people of biracial ethnicity. Taylor, a biracial television journalist, who looks white is threatened by a White Supremacist group after she poses as a would be member and brings down the organization. Once the members are released from prison their main objective is to destroy Taylor.

After a ten year separation in walks the man that Taylor loved more than any one else, Julian also biracial and a television journalist has returned to reclaim the love they once shared . One problem, Taylor is now engaged and scheduled to marry the owner of the television station they both now work for. Philip , Taylor's fiancee has a few deep dark secrets that brings the story to an explosive confrontation between him and Taylor, and later him and Julian.

The daring prison escape of the White supremacist was one no one could have anticipated but was so explosive that it had me holding my breath.

The story was very well written and the love scenes between Taylor and Julian were to say the least heartstopping. The dramatic climax is what make this books worthy of Hollywood taking a read and making a movie on it.

You will not want to put this book down. 350 pages was not enough! I read this book in one sitting because i could not stand to wait and see what happened next. Definitely a keeper!

5.0 out of 5 stars I stayed up all night reading this book., November 6, 1998

I'm interested in books about multiracial folks because I myself have a black mother and a white father. I don't normally read thrillers, but I felt the social relevance of Taylor's journalistic endeavours made the book read like a movie. I visualized everything I read; Bowman has a real talent for making her words leap off the page. The images still flash through my mind. Her portrayl of biracial angst is accurate and I recommend this novel to everyone, both biracial and not.
