Absolutely brilliant!! So funny, sooooooooooooo sexy, slightly disturbing and totally wonderful! I didn't want to put it down. "White Chocolate," although fictional, will take you to a world that truly exists in America. Thought provoking, funny, shocking and sensual, Lynch-Clare has managed to give us a peek into the lives of the Caribbean-American and American upper middle class here in America. Ha ha...Ben Wa balls! "White Chocolate" will have many rushing to their local "Adult" store to buy some.

I was intrigued by the title; and then loved the novel. On the one hand, this is a take on race in a social world I'm largely unfamiliar with; on the other, the themes--especially re mothers and daughters--are universal. As a writer, I envy Clare this rich material. And her ability to plot it! Frankly, White CHocolate was a gift that I wasn't sure I'd do more than flip through, but from the first pages, I was hooked.

In a very straightforward and entertaining style Angela Lynch-Clare throws open and allows the reader to enter the gates of a newly upper class suburban Black community. Like any other arrivistes of any color or background, the chatter of these friends, while entertaining, is quite shallow. But Lynch-Clare, in showing this Black community in juxtaposition with its surrounding Whites, reminds us that interspersed with the similar superficialities, the Black families are faced with unique profound concerns that relate to raising families as minorities,in a world which often presents both overt and subtle prejudice.
I thoroughly enjoyed this psychosocial novel, except for what seemed like a surplus of hot sex scenes, interjected by the author who is a sex therapist, in addition to being such a skilled writer.

A fascinating satirical (and you must keep in mind that it is a satire) look into the lives of the black upper middle and upper class in affluent white neighborhoods. As sad as it might be, much of what happens in the book, although at times embellished, rings true, and you'll see what I am talking about when you read the book. It is an interesting portrait of the many divides between culture and color among all age groups. Not only is this book fascinating, outrageous, and sexy, it is also hilarious. A great read and highly recommended!

Format: Paperback
Clare's protagonist (?) "Charlie" is a post-modern whirling dervish of historical contradictions whose McMansion lifestyle must be re-examined following a chance rendevous in the Carribean. Blending a wide variety of literary influences from slapstick humor to romanticism, Clare presents a challenging view of a black elite torn asunder by conflicting pressures and desires. Open to numerous interpretations.
