Biography

Al Green was one of the greatest soul singers of the 70s. His emotive voice crooned some of the greatest love ballads of the decade, particularly during his peak period between 1971-75. His big breakthrough was his third album Al Green Gets Next to You (1971), which included “Tired of Being Alone”. Let’s Stay Together (1972) included a title track that topped the pop charts, and a beautiful cover… Read more in Amazon's Al Green Store

5.0 out of 5 stars an excellent, though brief, Christmas CD, January 1, 2001

This is an upbeat Christmas CD. The rhythm section is excellent, and Al Green's voice is truly a gift. The only drawback of this disk is that it was made in the age of vinyl, so is quite short by contemporary standards. Maybe the Reverend Green will record another 30 minutes of Christmas music to fill this one out!

2.0 out of 5 stars A Huge Disappointment, December 2, 2002

This review is from: White Christmas (Audio CD)
I LOVE Al Green, but this CD is one that I can barely tolerate listening to. I have been an Al Green fanatic for over twenty-five years. His music has served as a sort of soundtrack to my life, during good times and bad. But this CD is not something I enjoyed in the least. If you are looking for the soulful Al Green that we all know and love, then this album is not for you! This CD is so unbearably 80's, totally overproduced, and sappy even by Christmas album standards. Al Green's voice is amazing, even on this CD. His voices soars, but the horrible background music and singing on this CD nearly overpowers his incredible vocal talents. Something about this reminds me of certain old Ray Charles recordings from the late 50's and early 60's where Charles' brilliant voice is nearly overwhelmed by the corny background music and singing...the music swells and Ray's jazzy magnificent voice is somehow paired with background music that sounds like some Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. There's obviously nothing wrong with this type of music, but it seems totally contrary to Ray Charles' voice. Same thing here with this particular Al Green CD...the background music is totally mismatched to Green's incomparably soulful voice.
