Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5 Up?Twenty-five traditional stories of the Lenape people are gathered together for the first time in a beautifully conceived volume that will enhance any collection of Native American folklore. Creation stories, tales of magic dogs and lost children, adventures of cultural heroes, and silly stories about Crazy Jack?a wise fool who, like Amelia Bedilia, takes everything literally?make for rich and varied reading. The editor has wisely chosen not to retell the stories; instead, he honors the storytellers and their culture by reprinting the original texts. Some are rougher than others, but the overall effect retains the sense of oral tradition. Bierhorst provides cultural context in short, fascinating introductions to each piece. A clear, informative, respectful preface gives a short history of the Lenape and discusses the different ways the selections were recorded. Historic photographs and brief biographies of the storytellers add to the richness of the book, as does its excellent design. Storytellers will find this anthology a valuable resource, teachers will use it in the classroom, and young readers will discover in it a doorway into a different time and way of life.?Carolyn Polese, Humboldt State University, Arcata, CA

From Booklist

Gr. 8^-12. For this volume, Bierhorst has selected stories from the Lenape tribe (more commonly known by its English name, the Delaware), many of which have not been published before. He introduces the stories with a brief history of the tribe and a description of Lenape storytelling conventions. The tales are organized by type--for example, origin stories and tales of prophecy--and Bierhorst has attempted to maintain the original telling as much as possible "in the hope that the reader may thereby be brought closer to the Delaware tradition." However, these often graphic stories represent a dramatic shift from the easily accessible tales in collections such as Bruchac's The Girl Who Married the Moon , and while they accurately typify Lenape folklore, their appeal will be limited to readers with a more serious interest in traditional stories. A glossary, a pronunciation guide, notes, and references are appended. Karen Hutt

5.0 out of 5 stars Stories 4th Graders Love, June 7, 2001
By
Katherine Malone (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The White Deer (Hardcover)
I teach 4th grade in Newark, New Jersey, and wanted to do some work on the Lenape with my kids. The stories in this book were so appealing to them that they tell them to each other and act them out when I read them. Their favorite story is the one about the White Deer, because of the gory scene where a person gets their legs bitten off by a monster, but then sticks them back on with spit. I highly recommend these stories if you can stand the imagery.
