Dakota Territory, 1810

Nothing is more important to Swift Foot than restoring his family's honor, not even love. Though his heart belongs to another, he agrees to wed Small Bird, in the hopes that the marriage will end a war. A war that began when his own father chose love over duty to his people...

Small Bird believes she is destined to stand by Swift Foot's side as his wife, that their shared past has shaped their future. She knows he does not wish to marry despite the desire she sees in his eyes, but she is determined to win his heart as well as his respect.

4.0 out of 5 stars delightful Native American historical romance, November 11, 2002
This review is from: White Dusk (Mass Market Paperback)
In 1808 Dakota Territory, half-breed Chief Swift Foot refuses to shirk his responsibility towards his tribe the Hunkpapa Sioux as his father did. Thus Swift Foot gives up his love for a white woman and agrees to wed Small Bird of the Miniconjou tribe. He hopes his marriage ends hostilities caused by his father marrying for love rather than duty of as a member of the Miniconjou tribe.

Small Bird's sense of duty reluctantly propels her to agree to the marriage too though she regrets that it will be a relationship of unrequited love. Small Bird has loved Swift Foot ever since he saved her life years ago. However, she knows his heart belongs to someone else even though her visions show that she and her beloved share a destiny together.

The romance between Swift Foot and Small Bird is a beautiful story. The belligerence between the tribes is well written, but takes away from the lovely prime story line of the changing feelings and subsequently relationship between the lead couple. Known for her Native American historical romances, Susan Edwards has provided her myriad of fans with a delightful tale of love.

4.0 out of 5 stars White Dusk by Susan Edwards, December 21, 2011
I received this book as an e-book from netgalley.com and the publisher, Carina Press. I enjoyed reading this book. It is the second in the series by this author that is being re-released. I don't normally read romance novels but the first story (White Dawn) really drew my attention. In this novel, Swift Foot has returned to his tribe to do what is expected of him-marry a woman from a neighboring tribe selected for him by the tribal council. This act is essential to his ascension to the role of chief. At first, he doesn't believe he can find love with this strange girl/woman named Small Bird. She, on the other hand, believes that they are destined to be together. There is drama, romance, sex and violence in this book. The ending of the book leads into the third book in the series and I can't wait to read it also. The story follows the couple as they join in marriage and deal with the doubt of their fellow tribe members on the leadership of Swift Foot and the safety of Small Bird and the rest of the tribe in the face of a threat from another Indian tribe. The culmination of the book watches as the fight between tribes comes to a head and it is discovered that the fight has been aggravated by a member of their own tribe. I think that this book is definitely worth picking up.

4.0 out of 5 stars I liked it, December 19, 2011

avid reader "gra" (martinez, argentina) - See all my reviews
Although its not one of my favorites, I liked it. I was unconfortable with all those names like: Calf Boy, Small bird, Swift Foot, Many Horns, etc... but the story is nice.

It takes place in Dakota Territory in 1810 it's a sequel of White Dawn, so I suggest you read that one first, because Emily is Swift Foot's first love, and this book starts when he has to marry Small Bird. He has to restore the famly's honor and in order to do that he has to marry not for love, but as a duty, he fell in love with a white woman, just like his father that brought death and pain to the tribe. But he will soon fall for his wife...
