As Curly prepares to ride the "meanest bull in the whole United States," he explains to his proud but worried child how he overcomes his fear: he thinks about places he'd like to see. Lucky Kidd calls encouragement to dadand alleviates fears by chanting cities and states. The story, told in dialogue, begs to be read aloud. The rhythm, rhyme and timing of the place names are in perfect harmony, and story hour participants will soon be chanting "Yah! Hoo! KAL- ama- ZOO /Tic! Tac! Toe! I-da- HO" along with Lucky. White Dynamite and Curly Kid is a book that is as much fun to read as it is to listen to! The story is terrific, full of action and suspense as Curly Kid watches cowboys ride a fearsome bull known as White Dynamite! I love this book! I read it to my young granddaughters and it was so much fun to see their expressions when they learn the child in the book is really a girl! The 7 year old then wanted to go back and look for the clues she missed when listening to the book. This led to a discussion of gender roles. Great book!
