4.0 out of 5 stars A movie inspired by Jack London's novel about a wolf-dog, December 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: White Fang [VHS] (VHS Tape)
"White Fang" was made by an international production in Europe inspired by the Jack London novel . Here the wolf-dog hero of the same name befriends an Eskimo boy, a nun, and a newspaper journalist in the 1900's. The plot has Fang in the Alaskan town of Dauge City, where he helps fight the corrupt Beauty Smith and his thugs. The films tends to be a bit slow at some of times, has some few story kinks, but this Italian-made 1972 film scores some good points for it's charm, great sense of adventure and danger and beautiful scenery. The dog playing White Fang does a good job in its charming personality, well trained to to certain stunts (even if it looks more like a German Shepard than a wolf or a husky). White Fang may not be too great in film-making, being a B-movie, but it's pausible enough to be watchable.

2.0 out of 5 stars Corny Acting but Entertaining, June 22, 2003
This review is from: White Fang [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I was surprised to see this movie was made as late as 1975--I'd thought it was late 50s or early 60s. The acting is downright corny at times--very staged and unrealistic--but the drama and suspense keep you watching. I give it two stars for poor acting compared to what we're used to today, but probably a three for entertaining plot. I haven't read the book, so I don't know how closely it sticks to the real story, but my daughter says it's nothing like the more recent version. (The dog, by the way, is more than a super-hero--he's all but immortalized.) Again, souped up performances compared to today's more realistic acting--but then, such was acting in days gone by. If you can stand the repeated killing, not a bad "family" movie.
