5.0 out of 5 stars A thought provoking book about what each of us holds dear., October 8, 1997

This review is from: The White Flag (Hardcover)
This is the story of a young lady living during victorian times whose family is well off financially. She seems to have an inner source of strength that keeps her from following in the path of her parents and does what is true and right. It contains some big surprises and will make the reader think about why we do what we do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tragedy, March 6, 2007
This review is from: The White Flag (Hardcover)
I gave The White Flag four stars because I love Gene Stratton-Porter's writing. Otherwise I'd probably give it three, because it's a bit overdone in the tragedy deparment. Ok, more than a bit. I think it may have been the author's response to criticism that her books were too much fantasy, goodness and happy endings. She responded, why not, why not write about goodness and happiness? But in writing The White Flag she seems to be giving her critics what they wanted, in spades. Insanity, evil villians, poverty, thwarted love, deaths--death by shock, death by falling off a balcony, death by falling down, death by a falling tree, stories told of deaths, even a suicide thrown in there. I don't know how readers in the 1920's responded to so much tragedy, but our jaded generation has seen much worse on tv and it almost crossed the line into humorous (imagine the characters of a silent movie and you'll see what I mean). There was a certain happiness I was just naturally expecting for our lovable heroine, though, and when it turned to grief I did experience a shock, I must say. The ending was disappointing, with everyone left to pick up the pieces of their broken lives, but there was a slight hint of hope at least. I did still enjoy it, and as usual, her books are highly readable.
