Book Description

May 1, 2012
White Flour tells the story of a whimsical and effective response to a racist rally in Knoxville, Tennessee in May of 2007. With Suessian rhyme and evocative illustrations inspired by true events, readers learn the story of the Coup Clutz Clowns, who vanquished the KKK, trumping hatred with humor, and providing an instructive and hilarious story of a non-violent approach to aggression. Jenn Hales' illustrations perfectly balance the seriousness of the topic with the humor of the clowns' approach.

About the Author

David is an award-winning songwriter and itinerant peace activist. A veteran of ten CDs and 2000 concerts on four continents, he suspended his eighteen-year music career at its peak in 2008 to accept a Rotary World Peace Fellowship to study International Relations, Peace and Conflict Resolution at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. As part of that study, he also spent three months in rural Andhra Pradesh, India working with a Gandhian development organization. In 2004, David and his wife Deanna founded PEG Partners, a small non-profit organization that supports schools and libraries in Guatemala. He continues to volunteer as the Program Director for PEG. He is also a consultant on Peace and Justice at the North Carolina Council of Churches. David is working on two books, the first of which is tentatively titled Worldchanging 101: Challenging the Myth of Powerlessness. His other upcoming book project is an illustrated version of his poem White Flour, which tells the true story of a creative and whimsical response to a 2007 Klan march in Knoxville, Tennessee. LaMotte s earlier children s book, S.S. Bathtub, is based on his award-winning song of the same name. It is currently sold out of its first printing. LaMotte serves on the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) Nobel Peace Prize Nomination Committee, working with twelve people on three continents to determine the AFSC s nomination each year. As a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1947, the AFSC is qualified to make an annual nomination. Touring full-time for nearly two decades, LaMotte developed a large and loyal following around the world. His music has been honored with numerous awards and grants as well as artist sponsorships from Taylor Guitars and John Pearse Strings. David s music has been featured on dozens of artist compilations. Notably, his song Dark and Deep was included on Songs Inspired By Literature, Chapter One, a benefit CD to raise money for adult literacy. Other artists on that CD include Suzanne Vega, Aimee Mann and Bruce Springsteen. Several independent films feature David s music, and it has been heard on the Today Show, the HBO television series This American Life, and an Obama campaign commercial. LaMotte is a public speaker and workshop leader, offering Worldchanging 101 workshops around the world for more than a decade. As a result of his work with schools in Guatemala, he was nominated as a Hero of Humanity in the Heifer Project s magazine World Ark and named a Madison World Changer by his undergraduate alma mater, James Madison University. Now based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina with his wife Deanna and three-year-old son, Mason, David has returned to national and international appearances to speak and sing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cruel Prejudice Exposed May 31, 2012
"White Flour" exposes the evil of prejudice in a creative way. It highlights an event in which non-violence was used to deflate the cruelity of a hate group. David LaMotte expresses what so many of us feel - a need to call prejudice what it is, an evil which can be overcome with love and humor. As a Pastor, I will use this book in teaching our youth the truth that we are all sisters and brothers, children of the one God.

5.0 out of 5 stars A children's book for all ages May 31, 2012
I first learned of the events described in this book when I heard David LaMotte sing/recite the poem at one of his concerts. I was so moved by the words that I went home and researched the event on the internet and was astounded by the power of humor, laughter and joy to overcome hatred and bigotry. Now that I've seen the book, the reality of that fateful day in Knoxville, TN is lifted even higher, using it as a powerful example of the "third way" to respond to violence and hatred. We don't have to choose between fight or flight, the options which so often seem our only choices. If we take the time to breathe and think, there is almost always a "third way", and humor is one of the most powerful responses available to us. While "White Flour" is officially a children's book, the beauty of the artwork and the depth of meaning in the story make this a superb choice for any age.

Whether you are a fan of beautiful art, love good children's literature, or care about effectively combating racism and bigotry, (or are simply a David LaMotte fan, for we are legion!) this is the book for you. Buy a copy for yourself and proactively order a few as gifts. I am confident that like me, once you've seen it, you'll want to give a few away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful. Just beautiful. May 31, 2012
What a great story!! I do not recall hearing about this rally and the response to it, but I think it is simply brilliant! This book retells the events of the day in a way that children reading the story subconsciously absorb the power of the community's reaction. I hope this becomes a part of every elementary, middle and high school library and gets incorporated into our curriculum on peaceful protest!

5.0 out of 5 stars Read books that matter to kids August 28, 2012
We spent many hours reading books to our children. We read books that not only were strikingly beautiful, but profound in depth and virtue. David & Jenn have created such a book. David takes an historical event and writes a poem worthy of a child's time while the artwork of Jenn will wrap them in colorful visuals that flow well with the narrative. Any child, or adult for that matter, will enjoy this story and want to experience it again and again.

The subject matter is powerful in painting a metaphor we all need to know and live; Love Wins every time it's applied with joy and conviction.

Not only should you purchase a copy for yourself, but buy extra copies to pass on to kids and families you know.

5.0 out of 5 stars gorgeous book about a gorgeous story May 31, 2012
It's sad that hate and prejudice are still such a part of our lives and culture, but it's a happy day when we see such beautiful ways of combatting that hate and prejudice. We all know that violent responses and responding in-kind do not work, especially in a situation that involves minds and hearts, not just physical realities. This story of people who chose to counter hate and prejudice with love and fun and a little light mockery is an inspiration. Add in the illustrations, which are gorgeous and capture perfectly the spirit of the story and the event, and you have one of the most important, attractive, and wonderful children's books I've seen in a while. Every home, church, and school should have a copy, so we all can learn from the example of these clowns and of David. There is no better way to counter hate than with love, no better way to counter prejudice than by peacefully (and hilariously) showing it for the joke that it is. I hope and pray that we can learn from this example even as we enjoy the beauty of every page and every turn of phrase. Each word, each line, each stanza...and each picture...are so poignant and pretty while at the same time being pointed. Thanks to David and Jenn for creating something so gorgeous that I can't stop looking at it and sharing it--and I know I'm not alone in that!

5.0 out of 5 stars Defuse Hate May 31, 2012
David LaMotte has captured the way to engage those who hate in a new and creative way. It does not help to return in kind, it does not help to argue, but hate can be defused with a creative response to the situation. The art work is outstanding and captures the scene perfectly. This is a must read and have in any library at home. I hope all middle school counselors will keep a copy on their desk to use daily.

This is a narrative and a kind of storytelling that teaches Humanity, what could be more important to read to children (and adults) than that, offering a way to bring remedy rather than retaliation or judgement, inspiration rather than negativity and teaching how to elevate a situation rather than feeling subject to it. It is simply an important and wonderful book, a real life happening full of ingenuity and heart, retold so it can inspire and give hope and power to the things that make us HUman..
