May 14, 2002 10 and up5 and upWhite Fox Chronicles
The year is 2057. Endless wars have torn the USA apart and enslaved Americans to the CCR, the Confederation of Consolidated Republics. Growing up in the wasteland of war has made 14-year-old Cody Pierce wise in survival skills, and now he's the White Fox, rebel leader of the children's barracks in a CCR prison camp. Once he escapes, life with the underground teaches him new skills in weaponry and strategy as he plays cat-and-mouse with the CCR. Every day brings him closer to capture, as well as to his goal: to return and liberate the children he left behind.

Amazon.com Review

Fourteen-year-old Cody Pierce, a.k.a. the White Fox, is on a mission. After 18 months in the evil CCR (Confederation of Consolidated Republics) prison camp, Cody makes an ingenious escape and embarks on a plan to carry out his revenge and liberate the children remaining in the camp. The year is 2057, and the USA has been overcome by the brutal tactics of the CCR. But pockets of Americans are building up their strength (and arsenals of weapons), waiting for their chance to fight back. With the White Fox's brilliant, ethical (except when it comes to settling certain scores with CCR's particularly heinous leaders), military mind, the downtrodden Americans may just have a chance.

Intense, violent, and visual, Gary Paulsen's futuristic novel reads like a summertime blockbuster movie. There's even the slightest hint of future romance, with a girl named Rachel who Cody encounters in his escapades. The CCR is more than vaguely reminiscent of Americans' cold-war-era view of communist Russia's evil empire, with a bit of Nazism thrown in for good, wicked measure. Paulsen is the extremely prolific and distinguished author of many critically acclaimed books, including three Newbery Honor titles: Hatchet, Dog Song, and The Winter Room. As a movie, this one might be rated PG13. (Ages 10 to 14) --Emilie Coulter --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

THE WHITE FOX CHRONICLES Gary Paulsen. DellLaurel-Leaf, $5.50 ISBN 0-440-41248-X. PW said, Plotted much like a shoot-'em-up computer game, this story set in 2057 hurtles through hairbreadth rescues and encounters with loyal American fighters and bloodcurdlingly evil Confederation of Consolidated Republics soldiers. The dialogue is pure B-movie. Ages 10-14.

4.0 out of 5 stars Escape, Return, Breakout, November 22, 2005

This review is from: The White Fox Chronicles (Mass Market Paperback)
The Americans are in a war with the evil CCR. The CCR stands for Confederation or Consolidated Republics. Cody Pierce was growing up during this time. Cody was fourteen- years- old. Cody was a rebel leader of the children's barracks at the CCR prison camp. Cody escapes from the CCR and plays around with the CCR. He manages to return to the camp and releases the children.

My likes about the story were okay. One of my likes about the story was that that Cody never left behind the prisoner children. I liked this because in the book he care so much for the children that he went back to get them. An other like about the book was that Cody escaped the prison camp. I liked this part because he didn't do any thing to do to get into the prison camp. A dislike about the book was that it didn't give many details of the prison camp.

If I could recommend this book to anyone I would give it to people who like action adventure books. I relate this book to the show Prison Break.

5.0 out of 5 stars White Fox Rox, April 18, 2005

This review is from: The White Fox Chronicles (Mass Market Paperback)
White Fox Chronicles is about a 14 yr old kid who escapes from a CCR concentration camp in the year 2056. Cody will then return to blow up the camp. After Cody escapes to an Army base he goes on journeys blowing up other concentration camps and weaponry warehouses. Cody then earns the reputation of the White Fox for his brains and bravery. Some things I liked about the book was the detail it went into. Like the part where Cody was walking through the desert it explained how blistering the heat was. The part I didn't like was the length of the story I wish it would go on farther or have a sequel. If you want to know more about the story read to learn more about Cody's friends.

The White Fox Chronicles

By

Gary Paulsen

Main Character

The main character of this book is Cody Pierce. Cody is a rebel leader of a children's barracks in the year 2057. Cody is living in war time when the U.S has been conquered by the evil Confederation of Consolidated Republics, otherwise known as the CCR. He is a daring courageous boy with amazing survival skills. His most amazing skill is that of a gifted lock cracker. Why does he have this skill you ask? Cody's friend, a major crime thief has been teaching Cody to successfully crack locks ever since the beginning of the war.

Plot

The year is 2057 when the U.S was conquered by the evil CCR. Cody has been captured by the CCR and placed in a high tech prison camp full of American hostages. He must escape this horrible place to free not only himself but all of the CCR's prisoners.

Setting

The story takes place in a prison camp located in the United States. High tech electrical fences surrounding the camp detain many Americans. The prisoners suffer regular beatings and their food is given out in small rations. The conditions are absolutely barbaric.

Theme

The theme of this story is war and fighting. This theme is carried throughout the book. It is highlighted at the books conclusion when Cody releases the American prisoners, plants bombs around the camp, and blows it to smithereens.

Critic's corner

I enjoyed reading this story very much. It was action packed, full of adventure, and always kept me guessing about what would happen next. I would definitely recommend this book to another 6th or 7th grade boy.
