Excellent first book of manners.,

Though I had this book when I was a child, in the late sixties, early seventies, I would give it to my children now. Beautiful, delicate illustrations along with easy to read text introduce children to the fine points of etiquette. I love this book and still have my original yellow copy!

Good manners are never out of date.,

This book should be at the top of the gift list for daughters and granddaughters. I have even sent it without an enclosure card to a young girl who really needed it. Whether it is for a brushup on all those things you've been telling your girls for years or is desperately needed, it's the only book I've found to do the job gently and with a feeling for modern day problems.

A point of clarification. This December 1988 reissue is not an updated version as a previous reviewer suggested. I bought it thinking it was an update, but it is not. It is only a reissue of the 1965 version. I am returning it.

White Gloves and Party Manners, Oh Yeah!,

As a child a class was being offered in my area at a major department store. This book was used to teach a class of about 10 young girls, the essentials of being a true and proper lady. We learned everything from how to set a table, how to serve food, to how to correctly get in and out of a car. The information in this book is priceless and every young girl should have a copy. The class ended with runway modeling and believe me, we felt like princesses. Thanks Shannon, Memphis,TN

A favorite of mine as a child, believe it or not....,

I believe I was about 9 when I first read this book, (I disagree with the "age range" of "baby to preschool")and instantly loved it. I got a copy of my own a few months later. Though I have not read the updated version, the version that I had (in the 70's) would probably be considered a bit dated for today's world. However, the parts about table manners and other social situations are still quite relevant, and I find myself wishing that parents of today would introduce their children to such a resource. Unless the newer edition has been significantly modernized, however, most kids would probably just get a giggle out of it. But speaking personally, it made me more aware of social graces and manners in general, and I still have my old copy, carefully preserved!

a harmless book, but if a child doesn't know these things by the time she/he reaches 7 or 8, its the parents who need help,

This is an adorable book about a life style that use to be common among the upper middle classes. Nothing offensive here. However, if a child does not know how to eat, or to be considerate of his/her peers and respectful towards adults by the time he/she is 7 years old, its the parents who need this book, not the children.
Manners are taught by example, always.

I have given all five granddaughters this book. I think that it is an excellent book for young children to learn proper manners. I also inscribed the words that Gigi's Aunt told her about table manners (from the movie Gigi).
Both of my sons received "Stand Up, Shake Hands,Say How Do You Do."

My favourite book!,
This review is from: White Gloves and Party Manners (Hardcover)
Looking for an etiquette book for my young son, I remembered this excellent book that was my absolute favourite as a child. I read it over and over again. It's got everything a young lady must know about, well, everything! And when as an adult I began dating and going to fine restaurants, never once did I "not know which fork to use". Can't recommend this book highly enough!
