5.0 out of 5 stars Great, jazzy, rainy night in the city music. July 14, 1998
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Images of Humphrey Bogart as Philip Marlowe private eye gliding through a rainy night in 1930's L.A. come to mind.
Great, moody, "lone sax in the night" set against a lush orchestral background bringing images of neon lit rainy nights in the big city.
This album grew on me the more I listened to it. highly recommended if you like late night jazz.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, dark film noir recordings January 17, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Flawlessly played and recorded... beautiful arrangements, wonderful backdrop music for conducting an extra-marital affair or planning a double cross.... makes my living room turn black and white and rainy when played. A favorite of mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impeccable January 10, 2008
Format:Audio CD
I got this cd years ago on a recommondation from a jazz player ( I'm a jazz wannabe) when I asked him if for suggestions for music that was not "smooth jazz" but not be-bop, outside stuff (Miles, Coltrane, Monk) that I couldn't get into. Of everything that he came up, this cd was an instant hit with me and continues to be a favorite. Sonically, it sounds just great and the playing is by top notch jazz session guys, staying absolutely true to the film noir vibe that was intended.
I can't think of another cd, except "Body Heat" by the same group that gets this vibe anywhere near this good. Charlie Haden's Quartet West had a similar concept, but sounds more like a "true jazz" album with real improv and not so precisely arranged as this.
It's the PERFECT late night, brandy / martini disc. I'd give it three thumbs up if I had them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterful performances by superb musicians March 26, 2013
By Rich D
Format:Audio CD
I have owned and enjoyed this CD since the mid-90's, shortly after it became available. As a professional musician with more than sixty years experience, I feel I have some degree of credibility in judging musical performances, and this, without a doubt, is the one recording in my collection that I have never grown tired of hearing. I would not, even if I could, change one single note that any one of these incredible musicians played. In addition to my copy at home, I have one in my car which I listen to at least once a week and enjoy it just as much, or more, than I did the first time. Musician friends with whom I've shared this CD are equally impressed.

Do yourself a favor and get a copy of this CD while you can, unless you hate flawless musicianship.

4.0 out of 5 stars Noire November 4, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The CD arrived in great cond, It plays very well. The music comes from some of the Noire's biggest movies. Classic cinema of the 30s, 40s, and 50s: White Heat, The Big Sleep, and The Postman Always Rings Twice, to name just a few. Timeless jazz music that sets your thoughts back to another time when guys wore hats, and "dames" wore gloves. A gun was a "gat" and a cop was a "flat-foot."

There is one thing about the CD. I bought a copy of this same one 10-12 years ago.
That copy had excerpts from the original lines from those movies incorperated between the music tracks. This CD copy, does not, it just has the music, but that's a mystery someone else can solve. If you're looking for good Noire music, then I can recommend this CD, and another one called, "Sax and Violence."
