Smouldering blues-rock,

That this fine album has been discontinued is a sin...get it any way you can!
"White, Hot & Blue" was recorded in '78, and features Winter's excellent renditions of Jimmy Rogers' classic "Walkin' By Myself" and Junior Wells' signature tune "Messin' With The Kid", as well as a couple of fine originals. Winter's playing is superb as always, and this is one of his strongest and bluesiest records. Virtually everything is top-notch, from the tough, slinky groove of "One Step At A Time" and the salacious slide guitar-workout "Slidin' In", to the acoustic Delta-styled "Nickel Blues" and the slow Little Walter-original "Last Night", which features some fine harp playing by Pat Ramsey. The album closes with a tremendous cover of Jimmy Reed's slow boogie "Honest I Do", a superbly groovy rendition with tasty guitar playing from Johnny Winter and a sizzling harp solo, probably the best Jimmy Reed-cover I have ever heard. Or maybe I should say that MY copy closes with that song...I can see that it isn't listed here, so maybe that one was for the European market or something? Anyway, "White, Hot & Blue" is a must-have for fans of John Dawson Winter III's bluesier side. A clean five stars...highly, highly recommended!

This is one of the best blues-rock discs ever! JW and company do an outstanding job and I have never understood why this one has not been made more available. It's worth the price of admission to hear JW play rhythm guitar on "Messin' with the kid", I kid you not.

I bought this album when it first came out, and I'm buying it again. It's great blues rock guitar of the highest magnitude. This is JW for the ages. I still play myself, and I wouldn't steer ya wrong.

It's just a cryin' SHAME this album isn't readily available. It matches anything Johnny has ever released including the groundbreaking "Progressive Blues Experiment". The song selection is fantastic and Pat Ramsey's harp playing just SMOKES! If you're a Johnny Winter or blues/rock fan this is a MUST album for your collection. I've had to convert my original vinyl album to cd so I can listen to it over and over. I believe "White, Hot, and Blue" to be Johnny Winter at his absolute peak.

Done at a time when most people were listening to disco and glam-funk Johnny Winter went against the grain and cut one of the most outstanding albums to grace the blues -rock genre.
He's blazing on this one. "One step at a time" is a lazy Texas shuffle which gives way to a fiery guitar break. "Nickel Blues" is a Dobro special with Winters voice in true Delta Blues mode. Sleepy John Estes song " Diving Duck "(a.k.a "If the river was whiskey") is handled superbly and on here is the studio version of "E-Z Rider" a song that Johnny nearly always performed live during the early-mid 70s. Little Walters "Last Night" is almost an hypnotic dream and the last song is where Winter pulls out all stops. Mel Londons "Messin' with The Kid" also shows what a great rhythm guitarist Johnny is as he changes the pattern during the solo. I managed to get a limited edition "Sony Collectables" version of this album on CD back in 1998 and i wish they'd re-release it again as it's well worth the money. |
