5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and getting better, August 7, 2008
This review is from: White Lies EP (MP3 Download)
Jessica Lea Mayfield is an excellent young musician, and listening to her is watching a flower bloom, a kitten become a cat. Her voice is charming as it is, beautiful and full of character. But like the flower, it is becoming more beautiful and becoming richer in tone and color. Like the kitten, it is becoming stronger and more poised. And like a rose bud or kitten, she is entrancing now, while being full of promise for the future.

Her music is full of longing, and lonliness, but still full of hope, pointing toward a brighter future. Normally, I'd be comparing her to other musicians, like Joss Stone, or Yasmin Shah but that would be grossly unfair to Ms. Stone and Ms. Shah (who are both gifted musicians, but...). Still, these three ladies share character, a depth, that is surprising out of ladies this young. She communicates pain that would have crushed a lesser woman, an innocence despite suffering, and hope despite challenges. I don't know if it is the message she wishes to share, but the one I hear is "There are rough times, but there is tomorrow". Inspiring isn't adequate; Jessica's voice can melt the old lump of stone that passes for my heart.

This one gets five stars 'cause I can't give it six, and the only thing better than this current album is her next one!
