Editorial Reviews

2013 release from Portland, OR's 11-piece orchestral Alt-Folk rockers. The band's first release on Roll Call Records is the follow-up to the acclaimed EP A New Kind of House, which scanned 13k+ independently after receiving stunning reviews from Bob Boilen/NPR to Rolling Stone to Paste, appearances on Letterman, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk Fest, Sasquatch & Osheaga. The album looks to be the band's launching pad as Alt-Folk's new darling.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, layered album from start to finish September 13, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I think it's worth noticing that this album is very intentional. The first song is called Prelude, the last song is called Post Script, and many songs flow naturally into the next song (but without sounding like you're coming in during the middle if you play the tracks individually). When it seems that it's easier than ever for people to buy the songs they want and leave the rest, this album has a conceptual whole that is reinforced by its parts. The intentionality of the album shows you how seriously they take the music. While that might be the biggest complaint you could make about this band, it's also one of the reasons that they're very good at their craft.

The first time you listen to Typhoon, you notice the instrumentation. Strings, horns, gang vocals, and multiple drum kits are there to support the standard guitar, lead vocals and bass. As you listen more, you notice the strength of the arrangements, and how 11 people can sound so tight, the way the strings section gives way to the horns without sounding muddled. And as you listen even more, you'll notice the lyrics, like on "Artificial Light": "Oh, I know of how the universe, it shows itself, It's always getting bigger like you / I was told that I'd grow up to be myself, I thought I would get bigger too." The lyrics are often serious and dark, and sometimes the singer's personal near-death experiences are alluded to. Compared to previous Typhoon albums, I can't put my finger on whether this is a bit darker, or a bit more mature, or maybe a bit of both.

When I first heard that Typhoon was releasing a full-length sophomore album, I was afraid I might be disappointed, as I've really loved everything they've released so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars Profound Beauty and Candor August 20, 2013
Format:Audio CD
I have never encountered an album that captures the simple truths of living and the grandeur of life as well as White Lighter has. It is excellent from start to finish. There is so much beauty and wisdom in this album but what really amazes me is that you can listen to it repeatedly and find something new to love with every play-through. If you were to remove the vocals from this album it would still be amazing in all of its orchestrated glory. Though I do love every horn, drum, bass line, guitar riff, moraca shake, violin pluck, and piano note, I am especially grateful for Kyle Morton's lyrics as he has the unique ability to add so much insight into so few words. They inspire a shared hope and a closeness to humanity by providing a better understanding of the simple truths of life that we all share. We are small in this universe and we all will die but we can share the experience with each other and that is something to rejoice about. Though at times the lyrics can sound melancholy, when you truly take them in you realize that they are full of hope and candor and wisdom. I cannot think of any other band that compares to Typhoon in sound or poetry and that alone is a feat. Do not hesitate to buy this album. Your life will be better simply by listening to it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Continually refreshing! August 20, 2013
Format:Audio CD
I must say after waiting anxiously for this album to drop after first hearing the single Common Sentiments, I was not disappointed. Very few bands can create such a successful mesh of personal lyrics and beautiful instrumental arrangements that Morton has done, yet again. No sophomore slump here. If you liked Hunger & Thirst, there will be plenty for you to enjoy here. If you haven't given Typhoon a listen yet, do. Also something of note, I am not sure who the female vocalist is but she seemed to have much more of a presence on this album which I thoroughly enjoyed. Happy listening!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible October 30, 2013
By Daniel

I don't think there's such a thing as a perfect album, but this is as damn close as I've ever heard. If the aliens who have been observing us for the last several centuries decide to contact me and tell me that they are killing all of us because, from what they've seen, humans are inherently evil, I woill point to this album as proof that we are capable of good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Sound; Great Pick-me-up October 15, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
One of my favorite albums of 2013. This album has a lot of emotional turmoil and pretty heartbreaking stories; however, the music is overall positive and joyful and never fails to have me in a better mood in no time.

The album has a sweeping orchestral sound that does some really excellent things with mixing in unexpected variety. I love this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great band! September 23, 2013
By danno
Format:MP3 Music
Can't believe I haven't heard of them until now.

Of course they have their own sound, but if I were to guess at their "recipe" I would say: modest mouse + the format + all of the goodness from the indie rock pop genre.

Seriously, listen to it now! SO GOOD! First song I heard from them was "Young Fathers" and I still think it's one of their best.

Album is actually worth getting. Reminds me of why I love music so much.

Lovin' it!
