  • Clean Ride sets up as a dry wax film. There is no oily film to attract abrasive contaminants, so your chain and gears will perform better and last 2 to 3 times longer. Clean Ride's self-cleaning action is activated by any dirt, grit or grime that finds it's way onto your chain or parts. Small particles of the outer wax structure will flake off, taking the dirt, grime or grit with it. This begins the cycle of 'self-cleaning'. Clean Ride is a unique, wax-based lubricant, so it is important to star

Several times I have looked at White Lightning in stores and never felt like going through the hassle of buying it and prepping my bike. I recently had a change of heart and picked up a bottle. After a thorough degreasing, I applied several coats of White Lightning and let it dry overnight. The next day the results were amazing. My bike was much quieter and shifting was much better. Ever since I've been using White Lightning as my primary chain lubricant.

I have used White Lightning (now Clean Ride) for years and find it to be more than satisfactory. I have always thoroughly cleaned my bike chains before applying using a good organic degreaser. Warming the chain with a heat gun helps. The Clean Ride advantages over oil and grease are (1) starts out extremely thin so it penetrates everything and then dries to a wax film, (2) because it is dry, dirt and sand do not readily stick to it, keeping the chain cleaner, (3) stays put, does not fly off getting all over everything.

For the above reasons, I tried Clean Ride anywhere I normally needed a lubricant, but didn't want the oily mess. Door hinges, locks, machine screws, etc. I find in most circumstances it exceeds my expectations and it seems to last a very long time. Does not replace oil or grease in machinery, but for intermittent or low speed mechanical equipment it works very well.

I have not used it extensively on non-metal parts so I cannot comment on how it works with them.

The first bottle of this I found actually came from a discount store. Couldn't believe that. Anyway...when I found a much larger bottle on Amazon.com for a better price - I ordered it ASAP. If you own a new bicycle, start with this product & stick with it. If your bicycle has a few miles on it - CLEAN your chain THOROUGHLY before applying. You don't want any old grease, road grime or anything on your chain before using. A clean chain is a MUST.

Once on, you won't believe the outcome. It goes on clean & stays clean. You will not find yourself giving the chain a thorough cleaning again for a long while. I recommend using it every 100 to 150 miles - tops - more often if you think your bike needs it.

I'm a 'fair weather' rider. If you go out in any kind of weather or condition, try White Lightning Wet Ride Extreme Conditions Heavy Bicycle Chain Lube, 8-Ounce Drip Squeeze Bottle. Naturally, if you ride under extreme conditions, a good chain cleaning will need to be more frequent.

It's a great lube if you want your chain to stay dry, BUT it is best applied to a super-clean chain or else you'll only be bonding dirt to your chain permanently. Meaning super hot water and even getting on your hands and knees with a toothbrush wont take this stuff off. It's pretty much permanent!

Lubing a bike is a difficult problem. Everyone has a "solution" for it but none of them are that good. Unfortunately this lube is no different.

Here's the problem. You want a lube to do the following:

1. reduce friction
2. decrease wear
3. make things quiet
4. last a long time
5. not wash off in the rain
6. prevent rust

The problem is #6. All lubes, especially those that are good at #6, accumulate dirt, which increases friction and wear and causes noise. Virtually all lubes are worse in these first three respects than no lube after they start getting dirty.

The idea behind this clean ride is to make a lube that is super clean. Sacrifice #4, #5, and #6 in order to avoid this dirty situation. This lube does sacrifice #4, #5, and #6, but unfortunately they didn't go all the way toward cleanliness. There is still some oily residue that collects dirt. The lube itself doesn't last long, washes off in water, and does little to prevent rust. And it's not very good at the actual lubricating or quieting of the drive. It's kind of a jack of all trades but definitely a master of none. Some people have done analysis on it to figure out why it doesn't lube better and decided that it's too liquid. Not enough wax in there. Most everything you put in dries away and the remainder is not a very good lube. You will see when you use it...this is as liquid as water and when it dries you can't tell anything's there...there's very little waxy residue.

So what do I suggest instead? I suggest using parafin wax. You can buy it on Amazon. Heat it in a crock pot or on the stove. Dip your chain in it. Let it get hot enough that the wax sticks to it. Then take it out and use.

If you ride less than 20 miles a weak this stuff is a good purchase, but if your riding 60 to 80 miles a week stay away from this product.

This product requires frequent application for serious riders, though after applied it does provide excellent lubrication but lacks in duration.

For serious riders I would suggest "Boeshield T-9", this product goes for $14 on a 4 oz can at my local bike shop. This lasts me a year easily at 80 miles a week. For me a 2oz bottle of "White Lightning" might last a month and a half in dry weather use. I've had this product for less than a month and have gone through half the bottle.

Like any wax based lube "White Lightning" can be removed easily with mineral spirits and a steel wire brush.
