I'll admit that I was one of Natalie's detractors when "Torn" was played into the ground a few years ago. I was about to write her off as a one-hit wonder but that all changed when I heard the first single off her new album "White Lilies Island", called "Wrong Impression". So, when you want to listen to the album with a CD-ROM Drive, be prepared for possible problems. It only plays in a standard Music CD Player. And not even that is for sure.

I'll admit that I was one of Natalie's detractors when "Torn" was played into the ground a few years ago. I was about to write her off as a one-hit wonder but that all changed when I heard the first single off her new album "White Lilies Island", called "Wrong Impression". The song itself is even catchier than "Torn", a song I once loved but grew tired of. When I heard the entire album I was definitely a changed person. This album has definitely altered my perception and attitude towards Natalie. I absolutely adore this album. Every song on this album just impressed me so much that I have completely forgiven Natalie for "Torn". "Everything Goes" is a perhaps my favorite ballad on this album. It's quiet, subdued, and emotional. The opening riffs to "Hurricane" definitely has some Garbage influences in the first few seconds, as does the following track "Sunlight". Apparently Natalie has been listening to a lot of Garbage and maybe Joydrop with that same electronic/rock vibe."That Day" and "Beauty on Fire" is an excellent way to open up the album. There were even moments when Natalie's vocals sounded a bit like Ani Difranco. "Goodbye" is a stunning ballad that is just as good as "Everything Goes". None of the tracks on this album sounds anything like "Torn" which is a good thing. My only flaw with this album is that I can't play it on my computer at work which really annoys me to no ends of the earth (thank you very much RCA Records). Nevertheless I love this album. I'm not going to give it up just because I can't listen to it on my computer at work.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a surprise!, December 7, 2001

First of all, let me say, I never bought "Left of the Middle." "Torn" was a great song, I enjoyed "Smoke" while overseas. But the rest just seemed like Alanis-wannabe material. Despite her amazing looks, I thought we would never hear from her again.

My impression of her changed with this album. I heard this CD from a friend and had to buy it. With the quirky opening "That Day," to the Madonna-esque "Beauty on The Fire," Nats gets off to a great start. But it doesn't stop there. "Satellite" is a cheery, catchy tune that leaves you wanting more from the newly-proclaimed "Dido from Down Under." Other great tunes are "Everything Goes" and Butterflies." I would have to say the song that makes this album is "Wrong Impression." This tune picks up where "Torn" left off and has single written all over it. Hopefully she won't make the same mistake she did in the UK, and release "That Day" first. A great song but not radio-friendly. The only downside of this album is "Do You Love," which sounds like a leftover 80's hair ballad. I always skip it.

Buy this CD! Either now on import, or wait until the 2002 release. It is well worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars where'd this sound come from?!, December 11, 2001
This review is from: White Lilies Island - Germany (Audio CD)
I never listened to this chik, but a friend convinced me to buy it and I am amazed. Its fun, poppy, great listening music. If I had to draw any likenesses, I'd say she's like Jewel without the whiney depressive bs. Go with this one, its a winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome sophomore effort!!, November 30, 2001

I was a little nervous to see how Natalie's follow-up effort
would fare. Much to my delight this album is excellent, well crafted and in many ways better than her first.

First, the songwriting. There was much criticism after "Left of the Middle" that the hit song "Torn" hadn't been written by Natalie. Well, rest easy fans, because all songs on this CD (I believe) were penned by her and they are quite good. Mature lyrics, interesting introspection and a good balance of emotions.

The overall result is an album full of songs that are catchy but not in a cheesy pop fashion, instead drawing you in with their emotion and subtle sound. I immediately love almost all the tracks, which is very rare for me (her first album had to grow on me). I highly recommend this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Its a Marvel, February 17, 2002

First of all im a Natalie Imbruglia huge fan, but im going to be very objective on this review. This a marvelous CD. And for you guys outside US dont panic if you dont like That day because the 11 other songs have nothing in common with the first track. I have to say that my favourites songs from WLI are Satellite, Come September, Beauty on the Fire and That day. I kind of dislike Sunlight and Hurricane, i really dont get that songs.
And talking about Wrong Impression, many people say that thats the best track, but i disagree. I think that song is nice, happy, its video is good, but its too radio-like, so its easy to be tire of that song quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truely worth the wait...., January 24, 2002

When I found out that Natatlie Imbruglia was releasing a new cd, I was over joyed. I loved Left of the Middle, and its been 4 years since that cd was released. None the less I was excited to hear the new stuff. And the waiting was so worth it.

The first single That Day, is probably one of my favorite songs of all time. Its different from what the radio seems to play every day. And its a shame the radio stations in the States never played it, because its truly amazing song. Her next single, Wrong Impression, is doing far better, and the song itself is a great song.

White Lilies Island is a great cd. I think that Do You Love is one of the more stronger tracks on the cd. Its probably my favortie, besides That Day. Other good track are Beauty on the Fire, and Satalite...and the rest of the cd. Its just a really good cd. The cd just flows along with mellow music, and its worth getting the import, because it will probably be another 2 months before its released here in the States.

Shame on you if you haven't heard this stunning album .
Even if you couldn't get your head round 'That dat' the rest is the the best music i heard all 2001 . Mix between Dido and garbage and not a glitch in the CD player or Rom.
Get it!

This is an excellent album. A pity they are releasing it so late in the US, but it's worth the wait or the import cost. The songs are very well done and Natalie sounds better then ever. If you liked her first album, you'll like this one. It's more soulful and moody then her previous release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Left of the Middle, January 26, 2002
This review is from: White Lilies Island - Germany (Audio CD)
Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie was no mean to be the Jagged Little Pill No.2, but this is not the case for the White Lilies Island. Chasing the incredible success of the smash hit Torn and her impressive debut album, Left of the Middle, Natalie Imbruglia does impress the music experts this year with this absolutely perfect follow-up, White Lilies Island, four years after her first release in 1997. Written at her own home-sweet-home bungalow located at a small private island along the famous River of Thames, near London, White Lilies Island took her more than one year to record, not forgetting another several months for the whole song-writing process. Mostly influenced by indie and alternative touch, Island delivers a more aggressive, desperate but very sweet, more mature feel of Natalie Imbruglia. Island is definitely not a pop album, but not necessarily not a mainstream.

That Day, the first single off the album, was co-written by Patrick Leonard, the all-time favourite song-writing collaborator of Madonna. That Day is proved to be the most impressive follow up by any artist ever. Its breathlessly-rushed, uptight, edgier and strong lyrics alongside with its heavy alternative and indie feel shows the way Natalie wants to be perceived. She co-wrote all the songs in this follow-up, which she does not need to worry to be criticised for covering up other song as in Torn. Things slow down with other stand-out tracks, from the catchy Beauty on the Fire, Wrong Impression, Satellite (aka slow version of Intuition), Butterflies, to the touching love ballads Goodbye, and Do You Love?. Wrong Impression does deliver a sense of The Cranberries in its catchy and easy-listening chorus with a bit of country music touch. Butterflies, which is very different from Mariah Carey's, stands out with its girl-next-door touch, and its acoustic guitar touch. Another easy-listening track, Satellite reviews the truth of her famous love life. "Just try to write it down, or put it in a letter....", Goodbye, a post-Identify track, outshines the other tracks as a superbly love ballad with Imbruglia's beautiful voice. Talk in Tongues, co-written with Phil Thornalley who claimed his fame of Torn and also Wishing I Was There, is another brilliant ballad which Natalie reviewed in her UK Tour back in 1998. In Beauty on the Fire, she wrote "Tonight, could I be lost forever?" implies her fear of recording a follow up. However, there's no need for Miss Imbruglia to worry of anything, Island will certainly become a smash hit, probably more than what Left of the Middle had received. The fact that White Lilies Island will be released on the same day as Britney Spear's third album in three years, on 5th November 2001 may give the music listeners a break from the teenage-pop music. Island, as one of the most anticipated album this year will be another breakthrough in the music scene. Not forgetting, she had recorded 30s other songs, of which some of them will be released as the B-sides off her upcoming singles. Imbruglia's fans will find that this album is what they had always wanted to listen for. White Lilies Island is certainly a must for those who are into alternative and rock female artist, or even indie music lovers.
It will be a great year in music whereby Alanis makes her come back album and Natalie with her sophomore album. My prediction for a great year in rock female angst.
