Augusta is Reding's most unique heroine so far, IMO, and Noah is the only man who could match her. 2.0 out of 5 stars Lost me in the first chapter.
I have been reading Ms. Redings books now, hoping to get through all of them. But I must say, with great disappointment, that this book lost me in the first chapter, and I'm afraid the disappointment will continue throughout the book. So, although I'm sure Lady Augusta is a wonderful heroine, my thoughts are constantly brought back to Lady Sarah, the younger sister of...

Augusta's wry wit and outlook on the strictures of society during the early 19th century in London were an added bonus. Keep your stories coming, Ms. Reding. I'll gladly give up sleeping to read them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful regency story, June 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: White Magic (Topaz Historical Romance) (Paperback)
Lord Noah Edenhall is shocked when his best friend commits suicide after being spurned by an evil ogress. Noah concludes that Lady Augusta Brierley is the woman who destroyed his buddy since her envelope and a letter containing her initial was found on the deceased.

Augusta acts nothing like the femme fatale. Instead, she ignores the rules of the Ton, preferring to remain on the shelf so she can study astronomy. To their mutual chagrin, Noah and Augusta are immediately attracted to each other even though she does not trust him enough to confide her secret to him. However, before the couple can even consider exploring a future together, they must contend with the threat from an unknown assailant, who wants both of them to join Noah's buddy in death.

Regency England is always an interesting place to visit when reading a Jaclyn Reding novel. The story line is filled with action and intrigue that will mesmerize readers. The lead characters are a wonderfully classic Regency couple, who battles with each other, their emotions, and a dangerous intruder. Like its predecessor, the highly regarded WHITE HEATHER, WHITE MAGIC is a fascinating tale that will leave genre fans fully entertained.

At every turn of the page the charictors seemed to become more and more real and enchanting to me! White magic is truley the best suited title for this book; I could almost relate with our Lord Noah when he felt as though he had been bewiched! Thank you Jacklyn you truely are an amazing writer, you woke things up in me I hadn't deemed possible! signed A Lady

Ms. Reding's books are always a delight and this one is no exception. I loved the hero and heroine, and found myself guessing and guessing as to who the villian was. Good surprises at the end and a wonderful read throughout. Don't miss this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining!, November 4, 1998

Augusta and Lord Noah are very engaging characters. Augusta is the the most surprising one, however, with the work she has chosen to dedicate her life to. In her day, her choice was never thought to be of interest to women, which is what made this book's character all the more intriguing.

A couple of things left me wondering, but perhaps those things will be revealed in the next book. For that, I anxiously await. -Lee Emory

I loved this book. The characters were wonderful, the setting beautiful and this author knows how to take a reader right into a time and place that no longer exists. Can't wait for her next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unconventional characters, a totally engaging story., August 7, 2000
This review is from: White Magic (Topaz Historical Romance) (Paperback)
The man stood and turned to Noah, his mouth set in a grim frown. "I assume you called for me to pronounce death?" When Noah didn't readily respond, he added, prefacing it with a deep breath, "The coroner would have been more appropriate. Of course, the authorities would hae to be notified, and a coroner's inquest pursued..." Noah stared at him. Despite his attempts to hide the truth, the man had immediately seen through to the fact that Tony's death had been a suicide. Still, Noah held to his design, struggling to keep a sense of calm in his voice. "I would hope, sir, you are not suggesting that Lord Keighly might have taken his own life." Shocked at the discovery that his best friend, Tony, committed suicide, Lord Noah Edenhall is certain there is a cause to his friend's demise. Why would Tony, ecstatic with joy over a new woman in his life, want to kill himself? Noah suspects the mystery woman, and his suspicions are confirmed when he finds a note rejecting Tony as her suitor. But who is she? With only an initial and a wax seal to go on, Noah throws himself into the duty of solving the mystery of why, and who? With the help of his beloved aunt Amelia, he places the seal as that of the Brierley, the home of the Marquess of Trecastle. Not only does the Brierley door-knocker match the seal, but the Lady Augusta Brierley's name begins with the letter "A." Certain that he is on the right track, he vows to retrieve a priceless necklace from this "mystery woman" and return it to Tony's sister, the rightful owner. Although her many night-time rendevouzes make her a suspicious character, Noah has trouble connecting Augusta in any way to Tony. But the trouble does not stop there--the closer Noah gets to the truth, the deeper he falls in love with the lady whose head is in the stars. The characters of Augusta Brierley and Noah Edenhall are slightly unconventional in their pursuits, but with all the important qualities that makes some heroes and heroines shine above the rest. In White Magic, Jaclyn Reding reaches yet another star on the horizon, following her first success with Book One of the Regency Rogues Quartet, White Heather. Set in Scotland, White Heather focuses on Noah's older brother, Robert Edenhall, who leaves England suddenly when he is accused of a fire that claims the lives of his family members. White Magic picks up the Edenhall Saga with Robert's younger brother, Noah, and White Knight with Noah's friend Christian Wycliffe.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lost me in the first chapter., March 9, 2005

Alice Campbell (Sunbury, PA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: White Magic (Topaz Historical Romance) (Paperback)
I have been reading Ms. Redings books now, hoping to get through all of them. But I must say, with great disappointment, that this book lost me in the first chapter, and I'm afraid the disappointment will continue throughout the book. So, although I'm sure Lady Augusta is a wonderful heroine, my thoughts are constantly brought back to Lady Sarah, the younger sister of Noah's best friend who was described up front as being everything beautiful in a young woman and also being Noah's friend's choice for Noah. Instead, Noah starts sniffing after a woman he believes drove his best freind to suicide. Guilty of this or not, the fact that he couldn't be bothered with Sarah and goes instead for someone he believes drove his friend to suicide, just turned me off. I think maybe this storyline would have succeeded with me, if perhaps the description of Sarah would have been brought about later in the book--after meeting Augusta--but as it is, I immediately root for Sarah--and wonder why Noah turned his nose up at her, thus losing my interest in Noah immediately. Sorry.
