Product Description

Product Description

MANUFACTURER WARRANTY: 1 YEAR

Amazon.com

For a century and a half, since a woman in New York invented the hand-crank freezer, making ice cream has been an American family value. Mom blended the ice cream mixture; Dad filled the maker's wooden tub with ice and rock salt to achieve the below-freezing temperature needed to produce smooth confections; kids clamored to turn the crank; and everyone happily consumed big bowls of ice cream as a reward. This family-bonding activity remains as vibrant today as it was through a century-and-a-half of "progress." With various ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sherbet recipes included, this old-fashioned White Mountain ice cream maker maintains the tradition. Only the use of modern stainless steel for the freezer can and dasher and the electric motor distinguish this rugged maker from the one earlier generations enjoyed. And years from now it will still be used, knitting together a family's history. --Fred Brack

I remember from a very young age my parents making incredible ice cream out of a White Mountain. In the past 15 years, I tried using 3 different types of ice cream makers but it was never the same as my mothers. She always told me it was because of her White Mountain. So, I purchased one! I had a problem with the bucket which apparently is extremely rare. My mom had hers for over a decade. I contacted the company. I didn't have a receipt or other proof of purchase. They literally mailed me a new one (after two years of use) without proof of purchase! Then, they mailed me a label to send back the defective one. This one looks great and works well also. Here are some tips:

Before you make ice cream fill up wooden bucket with water. It should hold the water and make the wood swell. This will help make great ice cream.

After you make the ice cream pack it well. My parents put the wooden bucket INSIDE a larger plastic bucket. Then they pack materials around the wooden bucket and place a heavy blanket on top of the ice cream maker after the ice cream is done. The ice cream comes out very solid, sometimes too hard to scoop out!

After you enjoy your ice cream, pour out the salt water and rinse very well. Wash with soap and water. Then dry with a towel.

Often, my mother rubs a little oil around the metal rings and the at the bottom inside of the metal to make sure it doesn't rust.

If you take good care of it you should have it for years and years.

Simply put, an awesome churn for home-made ice cream. I have an old hand-crank that I had always used to make the best ice cream, but it was a lot of work - churning fast at the beginning and then slowing down as the cream transformed. With this churn, the motor is variable in its speed and churns at an excellent fast speed to begin; then, as the cream solidifies and freezes, the motor changes pitch and slows down to give you a wonderfully whipped and smooth cream. I even made ice cream using just whole milk and peppermint sticks and it still turned out great. Highly recommended and much better than any other electric churn you can buy. I've had two other electric churns - neither of them could hold a candle to the White Mountain.

I would nicely like to disagree with the review above. We have two ice cream makers and if you take care of them properly they will last forever. We have had one for over 15 years and the bucket is still good. All that need to be done is for the bucket to be washed out after use. I recommend this great product!

The motors on these makers are of poor quality. I used it for les than 10 minute before it broke. I have read other reviews that say this also. Don't buy it.

I received this product as a Christmas in 2010 and was so excited to be able to make some delicious homemade ice cream. My dad had this brand when I was a kid and I can still remember the great ice cream he made. After spending $50 on product, ice, rock, salt etc. I set everything up as instructed and was ready to plug the unit in. After about 1 minute the motor started making an excruciating, high-pitched sound and within a minute after that the motor shut off completely. It was dead, burnt-out and had to be shipped back. Out $50 and an ice cream maker.

I have read other interviews on Amazon and different websites and this product is not the one your Dad had, or you purchased 15 years ago. After some research, the original company that owned them has changed hands a number of times and the current company is a large conglomerate. They clearly have cut back costs by using cheaper materials, but still hope the White Mountain name will sell itself based on its history.

Before buying this product do your homework, if someone says they have had the product for 15 years, ignore it, it is not the same motor. Also ask yourself, why is this product so drastically discounted on Amazon?

I promise you will be disappointed with this product. Look elsewhere.

I hestitated after reading some reviews, but bought this machine anyway and I love it! Using the Ben & Jerry's cookbook (with super easy recipies) this machine makes creamy, wonderful ice cream in 15 minutes. Dealing with rock salt was easy---three inches of ice then a layer of salt (kind of like making a triffle). I love it so much we bought a second one for our second home. My son thinks this is just the greatest fun and it has brought back good memories for all the grandparents.

I have had several cheaper ice cream freezers, but this White Mountain ice cream freezer is the best. First of all, the paddles rotate against the outer edge of the canister, allowing better mixing of the ice cream while freezing. This definitely speeds up the process. The motor is much stronger and quieter than others I've had previously. This item is well worth the higher price. Nothing beats homemade ice cream on a hot summer day.
