5.0 out of 5 stars Hopefully, their breakthrough!, July 18, 2000

This review is from: White Out (Audio CD)
For those who have heard their first album, _Chronicles_, they're in for a surprise, particularly in lyrical content and in production. Bob Mould's production was heavier, with more emphasis on guitars. Brad Wood lets the music breathe, with plenty of room for the bass and cello lines to come through. The songs themselves are more personal in nature, akin to Jason & Alison's _Woodshed_, but show a different perspective on the subjects of release and moving on.

If you don't have _Chronicles_ already, pick both it and _White Out_ up -- you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Verbow - Pop-ish music that actually has talent!!, September 6, 2000

This review is from: White Out (Audio CD)
Verbow has to be the best new group on the scene. All though they aren't all THAT new, they are certainly a fresh new sound. The mixture of the classically trained cellist, Alison, as well as Jason's incredibly versatile voice. .you have a winning combination. Their music will appeal to almost any audience. It's a great album that you can put on repeat over and over again and not get sick of. I HIGHLY recommend getting it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Verbow tackles the Sophmore Slump, and WINS!, August 31, 2000

After what seemed to be a struggle with their first album, Verbow blazes back onto the scene with astounding tracks that not only make you bob your head, but cause the lyrics to spill from your mouth unintentionally. Their first single, "New History", is a simple lesson in how they've improved. With their Weezer like intro into a beautifully orchestrated pop song it makes me wonder if it's the same band who released "Chronicles". Tracks like "I'll Never Live By My Father's Dreams" & "Corner Bending" illustrate that these guys have power to back their intricate structure and well conceived lyrics. Imagine the likes of Guster, Jason Falkner, Goo Goo Dolls, & Gus taking hands in the studio for a musical seance. Just listening to the lead vocals, at the begining, of "Ambulance" are so reminiscent of Jason Falkner "Or Well Maybe" (yeah okay with the Gray's but it's JF all the way) I almost thought it was a new track. Even "Garden" reminded me a bit of Goo Goo Dolls with their "We Are The Normal" style begining. Most tracks have orchestration of some sort, usually cellos, which give the tracks a strength and unique feeling seldom found in the releases this year. The vocals are strong, vibrant & add to the lush soundscape created by these fantastic musicians. White out is what will happen to your record collection as you find yourself returning to this disc again and again and again. One Of The 2000's Best!
