Classic novel dealing with the afterlife,
By
This review is from: The White People (Paperback)
Why this book is out-of-print is anyone's guess! This lovely novella, written by the author of the ever-popular Little Lord Fauntleroy and The Secret Garden, is a classic dealing with life after death. After her first son's untimely death, Burnett delved into spiritualism and found this a great comfort in dealing with her grief. This was a subject she was interested in for the rest of her life. During World War I, Burnett finally got a chance to put her beliefs about what happens after death into writing. The story involves a young woman with unusual insight living as a semi-recluse in the Scottish Highlands finding the love of her life. The White People is very evocative of life in the Highlands and is also a fictionalized validation of life after death. This is an old-fashioned, innocent tale that will warm your heart. Anyone tired of the graphic type of novel currently popular should certainly give this a try. Highly recommended.

I was blown away by this book! The writing style was elegant and beautiful. The story itself was amazing. It's told with the backdrop of a mist filled Scottish moor. The book begins with: "Perhaps the things which happened could only have happened to me. I do not know. I never heard of things like them happening to any one else. But I am not sorry they did happen." If you death is mysterous and sad to you, read this book. Although the story could have been sad - it wasn't in the least -- because of the underlying peacefulness of the belief and visions of the main character. I don't want to say too much -- that would give the story away. The sense of love, beauty and peace is something that you will take away after reading this little book. It is indeed a gem - and a short book. You can read it in one setting.

Having taken advantage of the free books available to Kindle owners, I just finished this little book today. What a rich, inspiring, spiritual journey this is, and what a total surprise. I was expecting more of a children's story, which it is, but by no means is it too light for adults. Burnett's characters often experience the deep nourishment available to us in nature and this story is steeped in that nourishment as well as the nourishment of the spirit.

It was a delight to find this story by one of my favorite childhood authors. It is quite different from other stories by Hodgson, but throughly enjoyable.

While this writing is only a short novella, the contents of it will stay with me for quite a while. All of us, in our own manner, attempt to solve the mystery of what lies beyond death. This is Miss Bennett's attempt to tell you her thoughts. The heroine is a lonely child raised in the Scottish Moors without any friends, parents or relatives to mould her thinking. She has been left in the keeping of very caring household servants and, because of this, is allowed to develop her own world of reality based on individual thoughts and impulses. Because of this she develops the ability to not only see, but to converse with persons who have passed on from this life. The story concludes with her interaction with her favorite author and his mother who quickly become her kindred spirits. She shows them the completeness of life and how it continues on into death. The two are merely different views of the same process.
