Book Description

January 9, 2003
Sidney Lewis Gulick's 1905 masterpiece,The White Peril in the Far East: An Interpretation of the Significance of the Russo-Japanese War is a fascinating contemporary study of the most significant war of the early modern era. Japan's stunning victory over Russia was the first time that an Asian country had defeated a white European nation. Japan's victory was a clear signal to other Asians that they too could roll back the tide of Western imperialism. The republication of Gulick's book is part of an ongoing effort by this scholar to introduce modern readers to now long-forgotten out-of-print works by pioneer Japanologists. The Editor (Daniel Metraux) provides an introduction that places Gulick's work in the context of modern Japanese history.

The author was a gifted teacher, writer and missionary who worked tirelessly to improve Japanese-American relations. This superb book introduces us first hand to the manner in which Americans sqaw Japan a century ago.

1.0 out of 5 stars Embarrassing, January 4, 2004
This review is from: The White Peril in the Far East: An Interpretation of the Significance of the Russo-Japanese War (Paperback)
I'm not really going to go into the book's merits. There are some interesting ideas espoused but much of the book is quite dated and not of much importance. However, I just want to point out the terrible editing. This book must have 100 spelling errors at least. There are evn instances of words being flipped. There is no reason this book should have released and the editor should apologize for people wasting their money due to his laziness.
