5.0 out of 5 stars Lightbulbs with shades, in every room..., April 24, 2005

Mike (San Jose, CA) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: White Punks on Dope (Audio CD)
After 1978 and The Tubes' "What Do You Want From LIVE" double LP, the band was on the verge of bankruptcy. Anyone who saw a Tubes live show in the 70s knows that this band spared NO expense for their fans. Costume changes, elaborate set designs, each Tubes show was a multi-media extravaganza that morphed from song to song...and record sales didn't balance things out. When the emphasis shifted from the kind of songs they made on the first three studio albums to the FM-friendly pop of songs like "She's A Beauty," things looked better for them financially, but it was the beginning of a new era. "Young and Rich" was the second studio album after the band ripped through FM radio playlists with the first album and "heavy rotation" songs like "Mondo Bondage," "What Do You Want From Life," "Boy Crazy" and "White Punks On Dope." Background singer and album cover model Re Styles stepped into the spotlight for the faux-Spector big balllad "Don't Touch Me There." Concert favorite "Stand Up And Shout" was introduced, and Bill Spooner's ragged, wasted, after-hours vocal on the title track ("And work is play...believe me...nothing must come too hard, It comes in the mail most every day") was perfect. "Young and Rich" is a little more subtle than the first album, but the band's chops from non-stop live shows had increased significantly. This band loved their music, they loved their fans, and they (on the first three albums, at least) put out music that was staggeringly original. There is a reason why the other reviewers are making comments like "AT LAST, Young and Rich on CD." It's a lost classic from the seventies that's finally found its way home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, Young And Rich for less than $100 bucks., July 25, 2004
This review is from: White Punks on Dope (Audio CD)
This being my first review I will keep it short! I have been looking for a cd version of Young And Rich for a hundred years. I have made my own version from lp to cd years ago. But the pops and clicks were still there because of an old album. Praise the music Gods that someone had the sense to release Y&R with the 1st album on cd. The first 2 Tubes albums ever released. Wow.

5.0 out of 5 stars ..JUST FLAT OUT REALLY GOOD,, August 20, 2005
This review is from: White Punks on Dope (Audio CD)
OH MY GOD...THESE GUYS ARE JUST SO MUCH BETTER THAN EVERYBODY ELSE..ITS RIDICULOUS, ...I WOULD SAY NOW ..LOOKING BACK THAT PERHAPS THE TUBES WERE 'TOO GOOD' FOR THEIR OWN GOOD...THEY WERE BEYOND THEIR AUDIENCE AND EVENTUALLY THEY WOULD 'LIGHTEN UP' AND DO AS THE RECORD COMPANY WOULD SAY AND THIS WOULD JUST END UP KILLING THE TUBES AT THE END....BUT IN THE BEGINNING ...AND AS FAR UP TO 'REMOTE CONTROL'...FOR A LITTLE WHILE ON PLANET EARTH, THE TUBES MAY HAVE BEEN (LOUDLY TOO) REALLY THE GREATEST ROCK-ART-PROG BAND AROUND...AND LIVE THEY'RE ABSOLUTELY INSANE..."UP FROM THE DEEP" ---WOOOOWWW !! BUY THE TUBES !
