After 1978 and The Tubes' "What Do You Want From LIVE" double LP, the band was on the verge of bankruptcy. Anyone who saw a Tubes live show in the 70s knows that this band spared NO expense for their fans. Costume changes, elaborate set designs, each Tubes show was a multi-media extravaganza that morphed from song to song...and record sales didn't balance things out. When the emphasis shifted from the kind of songs they made on the first three studio albums to the FM-friendly pop of songs like "She's A Beauty," things looked better for them financially, but it was the beginning of a new era. "Young and Rich" was the second studio album after the band ripped through FM radio playlists with the first album and "heavy rotation" songs like "Mondo Bondage," "What Do You Want From Life," "Boy Crazy" and "White Punks On Dope." Background singer and album cover model Re Styles stepped into the spotlight for the faux-Spector big balllad "Don't Touch Me There." Concert favorite "Stand Up And Shout" was introduced, and Bill Spooner's ragged, wasted, after-hours vocal on the title track ("And work is play...believe me...nothing must come too hard, It comes in the mail most every day") was perfect. "Young and Rich" is a little more subtle than the first album, but the band's chops from non-stop live shows had increased significantly. This band loved their music, they loved their fans, and they (on the first three albums, at least) put out music that was staggeringly original. There is a reason why the other reviewers are making comments like "AT LAST, Young and Rich on CD." It's a lost classic from the seventies that's finally found its way home.

This being my first review I will keep it short! I have been looking for a cd version of Young And Rich for a hundred years. I have made my own version from lp to cd years ago. But the pops and clicks were still there because of an old album. Praise the music Gods that someone had the sense to release Y&R with the 1st album on cd. The first 2 Tubes albums ever released. Wow.

OH MY GOD...THESE GUYS ARE JUST SO MUCH BETTER THAN EVERYBODY ELSE..ITS RIDICULOUS, ...I WOULD SAY NOW ..LOOKING BACK THAT PERHAPS THE TUBES WERE 'TOO GOOD' FOR THEIR OWN GOOD...THEY WERE BEYOND THEIR AUDIENCE AND EVENTUALLY THEY WOULD 'LIGHTEN UP' AND DO AS THE RECORD COMPANY WOULD SAY AND THIS WOULD JUST END UP KILLING THE TUBES AT THE END....BUT IN THE BEGINNING ...AND AS FAR UP TO 'REMOTE CONTROL'...FOR A LITTLE WHILE ON PLANET EARTH, THE TUBES MAY HAVE BEEN (LOUDLY TOO) REALLY THE GREATEST ROCK-ART-PROG BAND AROUND...AND LIVE THEY'RE ABSOLUTELY INSANE..."UP FROM THE DEEP" ---WOOOOWWW !! BUY THE TUBES !

Best reason for a collector of all things Tubes to buy this CD? There are some tracks from 1977's "Now" on this, and "Now" is the sole Tubes album not already released on CD ["Young and Rich" from 1976 was briefly released on CD a while back - good luck finding a copy]. So from a collector's standpoint this CD is a mandatory purchase!

Made in EU in 2000, Serial# 544-325-2, Playing Time 78:34This compilation lifts tracks from their first 6 albums, up to and including T.R.A.S.H. (Tubes Rarities And Smash Hits). It provides a good retrospective into their A&M discography, the pinnacle of their theatre-rock era, often with a good dose of humorous lyrics (like on "I Was A Punk Before You Were A Punk".) The track selection is judicious: the true fan needn't bother, but out of the single-compilations out there, which typically cover the Capitol discography, this one's a good investment for someone interested in having the earlier side of their career. "Don't Touch Me There" is a classic. More affordable but not as comprehensive as the 2-disc set "Goin' Down".

If you are reading this you are most likely already a fan of this great band. This is obviously 5 star material and the purpose of this review is not to talk about the music but is to clarify the tracks listed on the Amazon site. First of all Amazon notes this as "Two albums on one CD, 'The Tubes' (1975) & 'Young & Rich' (1976), remastered & packed with eye-catching artwork." This is all true and all 17 tracks are here. The correct track listing is as follows: The Tubes 1) Up From The Deep, 2) Haloes, 3) Space Baby, 4) Malaguena Salerosa, 5) Mondo Bondage, 6) What Do You Want From Life?, 7) Boy Crazy, 8) White Punks On Dope; Young & Rich 9) Tubes World Tour, 10) Brighter Day, 11) Pimp, 12) Stand Up And Shout, 13) Don't Touch Me There, 14) Slipped My Disco, 15) Proud To Be An American, 16) Poland Whole / Madam I'm Adam, 17) Young And Rich

It is so GREAT to have the TUBES on CD!
I have been a TUBES fan for decades-- yup, decades! They've never sounded better than they do on CD. Before purchasing this CD, my collection consisted of mostly LP's. The CD's sound so much better. It's great to be able to take the TUBES with me in my car too! This CD has all of their best hits. If you are a TUBES fan, you'll know all the words. If you're not a fan yet, you will be after you hear this CD!

How many times I've searched for the second album of this band? 20 years after I have 1 cd with two albums, the first two, the best of tubes.
This is the best music you can listen for this band.

God, I loved the "Young and Rich" LP when it first came out. It was another 70's concept album, but the themes and music were all so radical.
I saw the Tubes in 77' in Medford, OR. They were doing the Y & R stuff. But it wasn't a concert... it was performance art. More like a Vegas show than a concert. I have a vivid memory of Fee and Re singing and dancing the inuendo of "Don't Touch Me There". And it was laughably over the top when Fee wore 10 inch platform shoes and a spandex outfit shouting "White Punks On Dope". Listening to this disc is a real treat. The humor of the music kept you coming back for more. "I'm Proud, to Be an American...and I wish every other kid could be one..." Great music and great theatrics! |
