Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Each of these innovative concept books adds an extra dimension to the usual lessons about letters, colors, shapes and numbers. ABC , like so many other alphabet books, starts out with an apple, but then departs from the expected: the familiar fruit becomes the subject of Black and White Rabbit's painting in a wry and often very messy journey from A to Z. 1,2,3 combines a counting lesson with animal identification (and more art) as Gray Rabbit molds piles of colored clay into a variety of figures. In Shape , Brown Rabbit investigates the contents of a brightly wrapped package. White Rabbit, in Color , shows off the mixable properties of the primary colors when she immerses herself in three big tubs of paint. Sweet-natured humor infuses the clear, precise artwork, and Baker's talented bunnies are as winsome as can be. Ages 6 mos.-3 yrs.

Sweet-natured humor infuses the clear, precise artwork, and Baker's talented bunnies are as winsome as can be.

Children's Literature
Cuddly rabbits help youngsters learn about the world in a Kingfisher-published series by Alan Baker. White Rabbit's Color Book is especially enjoyable for its gentle humor and the surprises awaiting a curious bunny exploring tubs of yellow, red, and blue paint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teaching the Colors. April 4, 2002
Format:Hardcover
Out of all the books at the day care center I worked at, this by far was the favorite and most requested book of the kids. I don't know why, but whether the unit for the week was colors, animals, or Easter this book had to be read several times during story time and was often read just for fun. Surprisingly, none of we teachers ever tired of reading the book. The copy of the book at the center was read so many times that the back cover literally fell off. The book uses a white rabbit to illustrate how by mixing primary colors, secondary colors are made. Not only that but the book helps introduce children to "sensations" that colors can cause; for example white rabbit thinks dunking in blue will feel cool and that red is sizzling. A wonderful little book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for preschoolers only! August 8, 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
While the simplicity of this story may lead one to believe that it is for very young children only, my elementary-aged children refer to it whenever it is time to paint at our house. White Rabbit allows a child to determine just how to mix primary colors in order to make secondary colors, with a wonderful conclusion that when you mix ALL the colors together ( and what child hasn't done that before?) you wind up with a pleasing shade of brown. After viewing a rainbow of tempra paints at the store, we were not tempted beyond the primary colors because of our story of White Rabbit.
