5.0 out of 5 stars High quality, well designed, flexible programmable thermostat, September 8, 2008
This review is from: White-Rodgers 1F97-1277 Programmable 1 Heat/1 Cool
I was looking to replace five of the typical, round Honeywell thermostats in our home with programmables. After a bit of research I chose the 90 series White-Rodgers. This thermostat was among those recommended by Consumer Reports. The features that were important to me were: 7-day programming to accommodate a somewhat wacky schedule, automatic transition between cooling and heat cycles, permanent storage of programmed options and schedules (non-volatile memory), and ease of use.

So far I have installed and programmed all units and we have been running the cooling schedule. I have been very, very impressed. The units are solidly and smartly built. The wall plate has a connection block to which the main body presses onto. That made installation simple and secure. The large, blue back-lit display is easy to read and the touch screen easy to use. Options and menu are well thought out.

You can set up each thermostat with 2 or 4 periods per day, different for each of seven days of the week (there is also a 5-1-1 option.) While the label of the 2 or 4 periods is the same (example, Day or Night on the 2 period option) the start time for each day can be different. For example, Day can be 5:00 AM on one day and 7:00 AM on another. You set the time and temperature for each period, a separate set of entries for cooling and heating. They provide a Copy function which makes it very easy to replicate the settings to all days or a single day. It uses year, month, day logic and therefore can handle daylight savings time changes automatically.

The temperature hold feature has two options. You can temporarily override the temperature within a schedule period, which will revert to the programmed temperature when the next period triggers, or a permanent hold. Another nice feature is Energy Management Recovery which makes it possible to set the desired temperature at a given time. The unit will start the heating/cooling prior to that time so the desired temperature is reached.

There are a number of other features that shouldn't be dismissed, like keypad lockout and the change filter reminder.

I see in some threads complaints about digital thermostats because of the "click" that occurs when the unit activates heating or cooling. While there is a click from the White-Rodgers, it is hardly noticeable.

None of these programmables are inexpensive but I believe that the quality and design of this product earns the price tag. Someone really thought about the user when they put this together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Look great and easy to use., January 27, 2009

This review is from: White-Rodgers 1F97-1277 Programmable 1 Heat/1 Cool
First time replacing a thermostat.

Compared several units on-line and bought this one mainly on looks. I love the large blue screen. Very easy to use and operate.

Very easy to install (though I had to call customer service once because my old unit had an extra jumper. They answered and answered my question quickly). Works great.

Only drawback would be the interface of the installer menu. Nothing to help you keep track of what step you are on. Luckily this is a first-time and one-time set up step. So no biggie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thermostats go to church!, August 3, 2010
By

This review is from: White-Rodgers 1F97-1277 Programmable 1 Heat/1 Cool
A few years ago, we were looking to save energy (and money!) by replacing the old non-programmable Honeywell round thermostats we had controlling the heating zones at our church. The difficulty is that we have an older 3-wire zone system that is incompatible with just about every electronic thermostat in the world. Except this one.

So we bought them out of necessity (we're using 6 of them), but the White-Rodgers 1F97-1277 blue touch-screen thermostat has far exceeded out expectations and proven its worth in many other ways. The 7-day programming lets me adjust for the various activities and schedules of events in the church. The "partial lockout" feature lets the users of particular room adjust the temperature if they're around outside of the scheduled occupancy time, without messing up the schedule or "hold"ing a temperature for too long. You can set high and low temperature setting limits to prevent people from turning the heat up too high or the a/c down too low.

Best thermostat I've ever seen. More features than we'll ever need, but we found a few surprising ones that made our lives a whole lot easier. And in the first year, we saw heating savings of about $2000. How's that for return on investment?
