High quality, well designed, flexible programmable thermostat,
This review is from: White-Rodgers 1F97-1277 Programmable 1 Heat/1 Cool
I was looking to replace five of the typical, round Honeywell thermostats in our home with programmables. After a bit of research I chose the 90 series White-Rodgers. This thermostat was among those recommended by Consumer Reports. The features that were important to me were: 7-day programming to accommodate a somewhat wacky schedule, automatic transition between cooling and heat cycles, permanent storage of programmed options and schedules (non-volatile memory), and ease of use.So far I have installed and programmed all units and we have been running the cooling schedule. I have been very, very impressed. The units are solidly and smartly built. The wall plate has a connection block to which the main body presses onto. That made installation simple and secure. The large, blue back-lit display is easy to read and the touch screen easy to use. Options and menu are well thought out. You can set up each thermostat with 2 or 4 periods per day, different for each of seven days of the week (there is also a 5-1-1 option.) While the label of the 2 or 4 periods is the same (example, Day or Night on the 2 period option) the start time for each day can be different. For example, Day can be 5:00 AM on one day and 7:00 AM on another. You set the time and temperature for each period, a separate set of entries for cooling and heating. They provide a Copy function which makes it very easy to replicate the settings to all days or a single day. It uses year, month, day logic and therefore can handle daylight savings time changes automatically. The temperature hold feature has two options. You can temporarily override the temperature within a schedule period, which will revert to the programmed temperature when the next period triggers, or a permanent hold. Another nice feature is Energy Management Recovery which makes it possible to set the desired temperature at a given time. The unit will start the heating/cooling prior to that time so the desired temperature is reached. There are a number of other features that shouldn't be dismissed, like keypad lockout and the change filter reminder. I see in some threads complaints about digital thermostats because of the "click" that occurs when the unit activates heating or cooling. While there is a click from the White-Rodgers, it is hardly noticeable. None of these programmables are inexpensive but I believe that the quality and design of this product earns the price tag. Someone really thought about the user when they put this together.

First time replacing a thermostat.Compared several units on-line and bought this one mainly on looks. I love the large blue screen. Very easy to use and operate. Very easy to install (though I had to call customer service once because my old unit had an extra jumper. They answered and answered my question quickly). Works great. Only drawback would be the interface of the installer menu. Nothing to help you keep track of what step you are on. Luckily this is a first-time and one-time set up step. So no biggie.

Thermostats go to church!,

This review is from: White-Rodgers 1F97-1277 Programmable 1 Heat/1 Cool
A few years ago, we were looking to save energy (and money!) by replacing the old non-programmable Honeywell round thermostats we had controlling the heating zones at our church. The difficulty is that we have an older 3-wire zone system that is incompatible with just about every electronic thermostat in the world. Except this one.So we bought them out of necessity (we're using 6 of them), but the White-Rodgers 1F97-1277 blue touch-screen thermostat has far exceeded out expectations and proven its worth in many other ways. The 7-day programming lets me adjust for the various activities and schedules of events in the church. The "partial lockout" feature lets the users of particular room adjust the temperature if they're around outside of the scheduled occupancy time, without messing up the schedule or "hold"ing a temperature for too long. You can set high and low temperature setting limits to prevent people from turning the heat up too high or the a/c down too low. Best thermostat I've ever seen. More features than we'll ever need, but we found a few surprising ones that made our lives a whole lot easier. And in the first year, we saw heating savings of about $2000. How's that for return on investment?

Simple outstanding!!! Easy to use and to program. I bought two of these for my business because of the advantage that you can lock the system so no one is changing the temperature, and at the same time I am starting to see the savings by having different temperature settings for closed hours. You can also take the unit to your desk to make changes on your settings. Very good product indeed.

The thermostat is simply amazing! We replaced our old one from 1991 due to its age. We are very glad to use the new one.The features are plenty and everything works very well. we all love the blue back-light because it is very calming and can change brightnesses. I would recommend everyone to get one as it is very easy to use and aesthetically appealing.

The unit was easy to install, works as advertized, looks nice. The best thing about this one is you can (only if you want to) change all the "installed configuration setting". It's not hard to program, if that's not you thing a 14 year old could figure it out in a minute for you. I like being able to set things like the maximum and minimum temperature setting, slow or fast cycle rate, backlight intensity, 22 setting in all. I would highly recommend this thermostat.

I had to replace a thermostat and an older model Emerson. This was simple to do plus it was about [...] bucks cheaper that I found it in other places.

Disappointing Product from a reputable manufacturer,

Mine just died and I had to replace it to restore control of my heating system. My blue screen 1F97-1271 is only four years old. Luckily I was home when it failed, because the thermostat failed in the "ON" state, so my furnace would never have shut off until the house burned down. That's a very scary fault mode and I have no intention of trying another one of these thermostats. The cause of the failure may have been the failure of one of the two AA back-up batteries which I found to be dead. The other battery was fine according to my tester. I haven't had a power outage in the past week, so I don't know why the failure of a back-up battery would cause a problem with the thermostat. If you have one of these 1F97 90 Series Blue thermostats, I suggest that, as a minimum, you plan on changing the batteries annually. Perhaps at the same time you do your smoke detectors.

Pretty Good Thermostat,

This is a pretty good thermostat. I "Upgraded" from a 1F90-371, and got a cool touch-screen and pretty blue color...That's about it. I lost the 'Advance to Next Period' feature, which I used a LOT on my old thermostat. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't have bought this thermostat, but it does have lots of other features you may find useful.

NOISY piece of JUNK,
This review is from: White-Rodgers 1F97-1277 Programmable 1 Heat/1 Cool
Do not even think about installing a White Rodgers programable unit if it is near your bedroom. After having my sleep disturbed by LOUD MECHIANICAL CLICKING, I contacted W/R customer service. They stated that ALL the White-Rodgers programable thermostats make this CLICKING SOUND as they cycle on/off...and I will tell you it is LOUD! Figure out how many times it cycles on/of in a night and that is how many times YOUR SLEEP WILL BE DISTURBED. Might be fine if installed away from sleeping area, but not a unit where it is in the hallway near bedrooms. I will be looking to ditch the White Rodgers 1F80-361 and install another brand, but per WR, ALL their programables make this clicking sound. What a design flaw. |
