About the Author

Roise Thomas writes for magazines and newspapers as well as her fiction. When not writing she spends her time travelling and mountaineering. In 1997 she competed in the Peking to Paris Motor Rally, and she has climbed Mont Blanc as well as travelling to Everest and the Antarctic. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From AudioFile

David Rintoul's rich tones and intelligent characterizations bring just the right touches of self-mockery, excitement, doubt, and humor to Rosie Thomas's fascinating adventure story. At the heart of the novel are Mt. Everest and a love triangle. Sam McGrath sees Finch Buchanan at an airport. He changes his ticket and follows her to Vancouver. But Finch loves another man, a man she met years earlier. Finch, an avid climber, has signed on as the doctor to an expedition of international climbers attempting Everest. The three principles come together in Katmandu. The novel proves more than a starry-eyed romance when it begins to climb. Thomas delves into the reasons that drive people to climb mountains and their lack of reason when it comes to falling in love. 5.0 out of 5 stars Not your typical romance...., February 28, 2005

This is not usually my genre, but a fascination with Everest led me to this novel. It took me to the mountain, wove a tapestry of characters that I felt I knew and told a love story that was both moving and powerful. The fact that the central character was a woman chasing her demons and not having to act like a man to prove her strength was refreshing. I have read real accounts of treks to Everest and this novel was not short on the reality of the challenges and the excitement of climbing Chomolungma - the mother goddess of the Earth. Good story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable, March 20, 2009
This review is from: White (Paperback)
I really like Rosie Thomas as an author because she picks unqiue and exotic locations to set the novels in and this one is no exception. Not a climber myself, but have always been interested in reading about it and Everest and have read several non-fiction accounts.

The situations and the descriptions of Kathmandu and Everest seem realistic to me (just in comparison to stories from friends who have been there and other readings). My only complaint about the book is that the will they get together or not between Finch and Sam got a little tiresome....of course I was reading this on an overnight flight so I may have been a little grouchy to begin with!
