4.0 out of 5 stars Distinctive, vintage sound.
Paul Brown has produced some of smooth jazz' greatest, including Boney James, Kirk Whalum, Peter White, Rick Braun, Larry Carlton, Richard Elliott, Euge Groove and Norman Brown.
He has worked with many instrumentalists and with a lot of fine vocalists.

2.0 out of 5 stars Over Hyped CD, But Still Solid, April 10, 2007
This review is from: White Sand (Audio CD)
Paul Brown is a tremendously talented artist and producer with a wonderful engineering background that allows him to set the standard in smooth jazz for clean production and versatile music. However, content on his latest project, "White Sand" isn't musically expressive as the content heard on his first two solo albums. The artist collaborations on "White Sand" make it tempting to purchase, but you quickly realize Brown's musical wittiness and versatility (Smooth, Latin or R&B) are lacking. Overall it is still a CD worth paying for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Distinctive, vintage sound., March 4, 2007

Paul Brown has produced some of smooth jazz' greatest, including Boney James, Kirk Whalum, Peter White, Rick Braun, Larry Carlton, Richard Elliott, Euge Groove and Norman Brown.
He has worked with many instrumentalists and with a lot of fine vocalists.
This time Paul Brown returns to his first love of performing as he debuts on Peak Records with this album , which can be titled " Paul Brown & Friends".
These "friends" include Al Jarreau, Boney James, Bobby Caldwell, Lina, Euge Groove, Rick Braun, Jeff Lorber, Jesse J. and David Benoit.
Brown takes inspiration from the 60's, as the songs' titles indicate, creating a very distinctive, vintage sound, which is an instant classic.
"White Sand" really represents where Paul is now musically on the guitar and has a lot of influences from people he has listened to over the years.
It is not a ground-breaking album, nothing is really innovative or edgy here.
Yet the sound is perfect, so is the production.
It seems that Paul is having a lot of fun on this CD, playing fantastically with "his friends".
My favourite tracks are "White Sand" , featuring the saxophone new entry Jessy J. and ' "Mr. Cool" with Rick Braun.
Paul Brown's music has been a presence on smooth jazz radio for many years and people are still liking what he previously recorded. This is another album that will please his own fans and will continue to make a mark on smooth jazz for years to come.

I didn't read any other reviews before I bought this. I won PB's other 2 individual CDs. First, I think it suggests fromt eh album title that this was NOT Paul Brown rather it is Paul Brown & Friends. Interesting liner notes about the fantastic cover work and art in CD package. The entire CD has slick "smooth jazz" production and further demonstrates why PB is the undisputed lead producer in this format. Featuerd guests include Al Jarreau & Boney James. Several other notable guest artists too. Make no mistake, if you like a contemporary Wes Montgomery sound, this is what it would sound like but this CD gets 4 stars since I think the other 2 CDs were better. If you are deciding on a PB CD, look to the others first but this one will complete your collection of his featured work.

A friend of mine played his CD, "The City." and I had to buy one for myself.
Then I discovered two of his others, "Up Front" and "White Sand".
All three are now my favorites to play.
Start a fire in the fireplace, dim the lights and have a glass of wine and truly wind down and enjoy his music.
All three are "must haves"!

I have heard Paul Brown's name mentioned more than I have actually heard his music. My introduction to him here is well spent, though like the reviewer before me, you will indeed find a few choice cuts but the project as a whole is rather underwhelming. There is indeed no mistaking that Paul is indeed a premiere jazz guitarist in the vein of say, George Benson, Dee Brown, Pat Metheney, and the like. Nice smooth jazz cuts but nothing extraordinary though I would indeed be interested in hearing some of his other work. Certainly not a total waste if you appreciate the genre but there are more sparkling projects currently out there.
